Hi, I want to replace the main motor on my hbfp. what is the recommended replacement aside from another stock motor? thanks

Jetskeeter,
You have several options.....
If your going to stick to a Brushed Motor (plug and play) you are looking for a 380 series brushed motor.
I have personal experience with 2 motors specifically:
Slomax 380 - Perfect replacement, has a bit more torque than the stock motor, allowing you to run M24 Blades. Gives a bit more headspeed vs stock 370 motor.
eXtreme 380 - I do not recommend this motor, it is very superior in torque to both the stock 370 and Slomax, making it very "twitchy" on the throttle stick. It hovers around 35-40% throttle on a 2S setup and climbs hard around 50-60%, leaving you trying to keep the stick within that range.
The Slomax will act just like the stock motor throttle wise, but has the extra torque to hold the M24's at a good head speed for stable flight.
Issues:
Configuration:
The Slomax comes motor only... thats all you get, so your going to have to purchase a pinion (9t for M24's - 10t for Stock Blades) and use your motor wires off the stock motor (soldering required).
The eXtreme 380 comes with everything installed and ready to plug into the Rx.
4n1 Damage:
The eXtreme pulls a bit more current than the 4n1 is happy with and I have read many posts where a 4n1 has been damaged by the extra current.
You can dig around the web and find many 380 motors, but I can only give you information about those I have flown. The Slomax and eXtreme are the most commonly used replacements for the HBFP.
A review of both motors by a fellow flier at RCGroups.com can be found here:

Yeah I got the super skids on and with the stock motor and 7.4 battery it doesn't perform like it used to when I had the stock skids on it. I have the 380 xtreme motor and it's real strong and I don't want to fry my 4 to 1. Also the tail can't keep up with the motor. So I am just using the stock motor with an 11.1v battery and it performs good now, just a little twitching from time to time.

thanks for the info. It sounds like the "fuse mod" should be performed to protect the 4 in 1. I wonder if the Eflite PTC resettable fuses will work?

If you get with the Slomax, the fuse mod is not needed. It's the better of the two options IMO.

You are going to lose tail motors like crazy, about every 20-30 minutes of flight, unless you push up to a CN12 motor. It handles the extra volts very nicely, but the stock tail won't hold up to 3S packs for long.

So what the heck it won't hold 11.1v and it won't hold the 380 xtreme motor. What in the heck do I do then? I think the 11.1v being too much is a bunch of bull crap. I am not mad or anything but if you look at all the cp helis that run a tail motor, they all use a 370 main motor and a tail motor just like the hbfp. So wouldn't they go out a lot too?

If you are going to get the xtreme 380 then you have to use diffrent rotor blades. The stock ones create lift way too fast, thats why it hovers at such a low throttle position. That being said most speed controllers perform better if the motor is running closer to its max rpm's so having the motor not running that fast can actually burn out the 4-in-1. I've had my extreme motor on mine for months using the xtreme blades and no problems so far.
stock blades have 12 or so degrees of pitch
xtreme blades have 8 degrees.

And as far as the tail rotor goes? Can I fly without getting an upgrade?

I already had the DD tail mod when I upgraded to the Xtreme Motor and Blades, but from what I've heard any of the optional motors Xtreme, Slomax etc will make it so your stock tail wont be able to keep up

The tail motor burns out because it is working so hard to keep up with the head, naturally, when you upgrade the main motor, you need to upgrade the tail also.
Every tail setup is different, on most 300 range CP's, the tail motor actually has a 9 or 10t pinion. The HBFP uses an 8t pinion and has to almost stay maxed out to keep up, meaning it is going to continue to burn out unless you upgrade. It is even worse with the 3S setup do to the additional voltage = additional heat and wear
Darkkaos is right here, if your going to throw in the new main motor, you need different blades, the experience I listed above are from M24 blades (around 8 degrees).
