View Full Version : Bench Test Complete

Hello... well. Completed the bench test today and all I can say is WOW!

I had two things to adjust, the propane wasn't firing. I needed to pull the filament out a little more, and I wasn't putting in enough propane in the starter tank. Once I got these two problems solved (10 mins) my Wren started right away. AND BOY, was it easy to do.

This is REALLY a great turbine! Can't wait to get it installed in the predator.

Ok.. you can bet I have to have a question.... the gas valve adjustment.... the manual says 1 1/4 turns. I "assume" that it is fully closed when it is all the way in? Then you turn it 1 1/4 turns outwards?. I had to set mine to about 1 1/2 and it worked fine.

Otherwise... what a JOY! I love the sound of the turbine starting up and I'm sure all the neighbors enjoyed the sound as well! :YeaBaby:

Well done, Deron, we're delighted to hear that the engine has run!
The gas valve is fully closed when all the way in and we find that opening it one-and-a quarter turns is about right, but it depends on local conditions and people often need a little more, occasionally a little less.

Thanks for all your help Sara, this project was rally a lot easier than I had thought. And I'm truly amazed at the simplicity and beauty of this engine.

Cheers,
Deron

Wonderful isn't it.............like a Swiss watch. But more simple and elegant. :YeaBaby:

If only people understood how great it is to build I'm sure most would chose this more fascinateing option.
And again as I have said before, isn't it great to have 'total' control over your modelling schedule in as much that you don't have to send your engine away to be serviced. Instead you can do it yourself when it suits and in less than 30 mins, and it's good for another 50-60 hours! Simple, no fuss and no Bull.........

Agreed! I made a video to show a friend who is interested and he wasn't impressed. He was expecting flames coming out the end. I explained that flames were a bad thing. Basically the video was the engine just sitting there with the engine noise in the background. He didn't understand :)

It gets loud! Do you wear ear plugs? There is a high pitch noise that would get to me eventually. Or maybe I was just too close :YeaBaby:

you want to hear a single stage Jetcat, that is loud, and yes really you should wear ear protection, but no one does, cos we all like the sound and smell..

Once it us up and flying it is quiter thaqn a nitro some people have thought my J/Cough was an electric model...

Yeah, know what you mean. I like the sound. I used to play my music loud, and played guitar in a band when I was younger... so my hearing is getting pretty bad as is. I guess a turbine a few feet away won't hurt thatmuch. You can only get "so" deaf :YeaBaby:

BTW.... when I was doing the test I noticed I had a sore throat afterwards (still do). Is this a result of breathing in the fumes? ... kept me thinking that "that can't be good for you when the turbine oil is carcinogenic"

Anyone know anything about that?

ear protection is a pretty good idea it doesnt have to be large ear defenders you can use the small in ear rubber plugs that are a bit more discrete. if your just watching turbine now and then, then there no concern but if your useing them or work with them on a regular basis then ear protection is a sensible thing to have, after all you cant replace your hearing. and with ear protection you can still hear the turbine but without the damage to your ear

i have got a set of those little yellow ones, cos i was finding myself going deaf, but that could be something to do with the home cinema i have rather than the turbine :YeaBaby:

As Darren said, you cannot replace your hearing, and i would hate to end up like Peter Rob :clappp deaf as a post and have to rely on governer to set up my engine LOL

Sorry Pete

Don't put your ear next to the exhaust pipe Deron, that IS WAY TOO CLOSE!!
Turbine oil is expensive, hard to get and carcinogenic! That's why I use scooter oil. It's non poisonous, it's cheap enough for spotty teenagers to afford and you can buy it anywhere!
Oh and it makes your turbine last for ages.....

Thanks Bell, I'll try to remember that! :arggg:

"Scooter/Motorcycle" oil? REALLY? I didn't know that. I saw that it could be used if turbine oil couldn't be found. But I didn't think it was better? Maybe I should switch when I run out of turbine oil.

It's Castrol TTS fully synthetic scooter oil. As for turbine oil? Never used it! Ever! Because it's nasty stuff to breath in, last time was near a Wren running turbine oil, I got a very sore throat and the smell had a sharp edge to it. Scooter oil is safe, smells better and I doubt you will get more than 60 hours on any turbine oil.

Here we go again with the oil....Guys, it makes no sense to go with a "safe" oil when the Kerosene/Jet A/ Parrafin etc is going to kill you anyway.....

http://www.hvchemical.com/msds/kero.htm

Don't get a false sense of security or "health" by saying this oil or that oil is safer. Keep yourself safe REGARDLESS of what you use.

And I'm at 66 hours using BP2380.....:)

Have you checked the MSDS Sheet on your "safe oil"?

Oh don't get me wrong chaps, I don't cook with this stuff. But there is no way I'm using that turbine oil, because it burns the back of my throat, and that has to be worse than 2 stroke oil that was designed with far more stringent emissions in mind. Wonder if it's worth testing a cooking oil additive on my Wren...........mmm

If it bothers you this much to use this oil and turbine fuel then sell me your helicopter:)

We have a number of customers who use 2-stroke motorcycle oil, it works fine. Turbine oil was never intended for burning, in the full-size applications it's in a sealed system, so there is some logic to this.
However, if Bell Bloke and Matt are making toast over the exhaust, Chris's suggestion of "Olive oil with a little rosemary" makes a lot of sense!

Good point. It's amazing what we do for this hobby!

BTW most of the "little foam earplugs" actually provide more protection than muffs.

The highest rated muffs are 29 dB noise reduction rating (NRR). Many plugs are well into the 30s.

And you can wear both for greater protection, but due to bone conduction the maximum protection is around 45 dB.

Although both ratings assume proper use. For muffs, nothing that breaks the seal (like glasses) and for plugs, proper insertion.
