Well, today was the 1st day the wind was calm enough to take my new T Rex out to the field since it came in last week..
I thought I would just do some hovering and work on what I have learned about hovering in different positions at home over the last week since I got it..

Well it felt so good to hover with some space around me, and moving from point to point went so well today at the field that I figured what the heck? Lets push it a little... I tilted the rotor forward and eased in the collective. To my surprise it was exactly like the sim... I proceeded to fly controlled circuits about 15' off the ground, moving forward but not too fast. Maybe, 15-20mph or so. Then I tried lazy figure eights.. No problem, felt really comfortable! COOL! It was really neat to bring it in overhead and lower it down in front of me and then set it nice and gentle on the ground right in front of me.

One thing that is still a problem. If I stopped it out 30"+ away from me facing to the side I could not for the life of me tell what it was doing.. I had to go on sheer memory to get it moving in the right direction again.. As long as its moving its no problem.

This is really fun and I can see that I have swallowed the hook and its lodged in my stomach.. Im at the point of no return now..

However, I have yet to flip the idle up switch, this is with only positive collective, normal mode, at a modest headspeed... Im not sure whats going to happen when I go to idle up so Im a little scared yet to try it..

Congrats. I did my first FF with a Rex. Got cocky like the 3rd or 4th pack and ended up sheering the head off trying to be a stud, flying in the wind. Lost orientation.

Just fair warning.

Nice job, Mike!
Hopefully your orientation problem sets in at 30 FEET, not inches :)

Don't worry, you'll get better at it with practice. For now, just don't go into a hover out that far lol.

I use to hate flying when the sun was getting low due to the silhouette of the heli screwing with me, but eventually things clicked and it got easier. Can't imagine that right now, as it's been about a month of thick clouds here :(

I went to Gates-Chili H.S. in Rochester. That weather is called "normal"
