One of my winter projects is the Joker 2. The first heli I have owned where I so far haven't a single point I don't like in the design.

Of cause I could dream about a wider span of gearings available, allowing for use of the NEU 1521 high rpm motor, but that doesn't mean that I don't like the Actro motor.

With belt drive and the low rpm Actro motor, there is set up for whisper mode.

I will be using 12S batteries which can quickly be changed in the Joker 2.

It is not a converted nitro heli, it is not a new experimental construction, but a clever designed 3D heli designed to last forever by Dipl. Ing. Gerd Guzicki. The man behind http://www.minicopter.de/

. I love it so far.

Hi!

Made a log-file with my Seagull data-logger, still need to find out how to connect the minus pole from the main battery in order to measure voltage and watts.

Max amp was 78 amp, equal to app. 3.5 KW.

One of the good things with being an e-pilot is that one always have the 220V handy for hot coffee, hot toast, microwave food, mobile office etc.

By the way, still not 100% happy with my CSM gyro.

The way the powertrain is designed in the Joker 2 is close to perfect....would like to see the Ion-X with this powertrain even that the NEU motor with a 60T gear and 12S gives app. equal power, the power from the Joker is silent power...and the belt drive seems to hold up very good, so if the same belts are used in a belt driven Ion-X in combination with the Actro, everything should be fine.

Need to fly some more with both heliīs to be able to say which motor/gear strategy of the NEU and Actro i prefer...both are good motors if they both will hold up in the long run...time will show.

I think the Ion-X is a better 3D machine, might just be my taste, but I haven't flown any other heli that flies so good and precise as the Ion-X....simply just the best big e-heli out there I would guess.

Also I think it is better to have the batteries mounted high and separated in two with good ventilation, as on the Ion-X, even that they are not as good protected as on the Joker 2. But normally an Ion-X is not the kind of heli one crash every week, and the good quality helps to keep the crash rate caused by failing components down.

Believe the torque tube for the tail drive is a better solution on big 3D machines.

Donīt know what difference the leading blade grip holders on the Ion-X do, but the steering and pitch control is perfect on the Ion-X...must be a good thing :-).

But make no mistake, the Joker 2 is also a good ship, and can also make good 3D....at the end of the day I think the most important thing is not the heli, but to get a lot of hours in the air, and for that one need a heli of a reliable quality.

Just got some eye candy from Bill....have a look.

PS. Sorry for the long grass, but my 12V 4400ma electric powered auto mover is temporary out of service, as it needs a new keyboard

fyi, the picture of the tailbox would seem to indicate that you installed the
brass idler roller in the wrong spot.

It's supposed to be in the top location, not the rear location.

the CAD drawing is somewhat confusing on this point.

Thanks! will check up on that with Gerd, sounds logical that the first thing the belt meets in the tail is a roller instead of an alu pin.....but so far the alu pin have done a great job :-).

well, it's actually NOT a roller. It's function is to keep the belt from slipping off the pulley.

The 'roller' is supposed to ride 0.2mm or so above the belt and not spin under normal
circumstances.

The same holds true of the brass 'roller' on the other end of the t/r drive belt/pulley.

Mine needed a washer under the aluminum block to give the brass roller
clearance.

Hey i was trying to work close wiht Min air on a belt drive Actro and was doing some testing but for some reason it all stopped really sucked becasue the Ion on 12s wiht the ACTRO in it is insane POWER FOR HARD 3D

PDC

Got confirmation from Gerd on that the "roller" should be in the top position.

I have a gearing of 11,6:1, which is close to the correct gearing for 12S I would say. The Actro motor is in no way too hot, temperature dropped from 100 C to 80 C after a flight when I changed from a 17T motor pinion to a 14T pinion.

Have been flying with 12S and belt drive on the Actro all the time in the Joker, feels like app. the same "insane" power as 12S on the NEU in the Ion-X :-). I love it, and think this is about how the power should be in this size of heliīs, and if it works on the Joker 2, it should too be possible to get it working on the Ion-X.....maybe one of the problems is that a new design of the Ion-X frame is needed to give space for the belt setup, where the NEU is a very simply drop in solution with the present design, and which might work equal good, just a different way to do more or less the same job with directing all the wattīs from a modern 12S battery out in the blades ;-) ....as usual, time will show which powertrain holds up best in the long run, and maybe I know more about that after this season as I have exactly the same battery made of the same cells in the two powertrains.

Hey! Whatīs that....3M....the Actro 32-3 MAX motor with the core filled up with copper.

Some different wire has been use for this motor, so that there could be space for some extra cobber in the core, giving even higher efficiency to this wonderful motor.

I think iam going to put one of these together as i think it would be a great machine to test 12s in.

I know what needs done in the Ion but just cant seem to get any one to listen

Yes! the powertrain from the Joker2 in the Ion-X could be an interesting clone.

This Actro motor is simply a brilliant design. Self cooling so the faster it spins, the cooler it runs, and no noisy energy consuming fans. Slowrunner with big bearings gives a motor I would guess last longer than a 48.000 rpm fastrunner with small bearings, and easier to design a 12:1 gearing for a heli than a 24:1 gearing I would guess.

When I changed the gear ratio to the higher 11,7:1 ratio, the temp measured down in the top on the windings after a typical 3D flight dropped from 100 deg C to 80 deg. C, with the same headspeed close to 2000 rpm, and the same style of flying. So if the limit of a motor is dictated by the temperature, there is still a good buffer from 80 deg. C at 22.000 rpm to the limit of 120 deg C....guess it takes a really wild pilot to get the temp up to 120 deg. C with my 12S setup.

The 40 deg C buffer to the 120 deg. C can also be used to cope with higher ambient temperatures than what we are flying around in here in Scandinavia.

With the MAX motor everything should just be even better.

I think this motor candidate to be the best suited motor for 90 power, strong, not expensive, not heavy, low noise, self cooled and cool running, easy to build into a heli.....isnīt that all we need :D

That is a real sweet Joker PDC, you are creating quite a nice E Heli fleet indeed, I am jealous. :glasses:
