Mike,

I ran my obit pro off the power outlets in the back of my truck this winter when charging 3S3P (6000mah) packs for my Voyager.

First I tried without the motor running 'cause it's a big truck too :) - wanted to see how far it would go without the engine running. The Orbit terminated with a low voltage warning after less than 20 minutes. Switched the motor on, but the charger seemed to have problems with erratic input voltage and didn't work well.

Now I've got a couple sealed deep cycle batteries in the back - we'll see how well these work when my kit shows up.

hey , well , the batteries are charged , man those astros sure do a great job, they charge and freeze at 21.00 on both charges , and since last night the batteries went done to 20.79 on one packs and the other is 20.78. which is still with in .01 of each other. The 3s3p also took a charge of 12.60 . and over night it went down to 12.47 reading it with a volt meter. devide 12.47 into 3 = 4.15666 and I do the same with theother 2 batteries to make sure they are with in the .o1 of each other. it is so that shows I can run my fury now , but I got to go to work damnit . but Im in bussiness now. my Buddy has a hawk and the gen 1 cells 2 4s4ps with a actro 24-3 and one of his batteries over night drops a half a v compaired to the other. so he has to hook it up to the charger to match the other one before a flight , dont know why his new cells do this but just want to say check the v before each flight so yall wont swell a pack.

yeh , they say DONT RUN YOUR ENGINE while charging . the car battery needs to put a constant voltage and not going up and down . good idea on the 2 deep cycles , after charging you could run some cables to those batteries to top them off during the day with your car motor

you're killing me Russ!!! DAmn, when I'm done with the power supply, chargers , generator...$1000+ ....arrghhhhhh..this Heli better be REALLY COOL...hehe

Eeryones input has been very helpful!!! It looks like one of the pyramid power supplys, either the 25 or 52 amp is best value... One of the ones that was posted earlier was meant for HAM stuff, and I don't think I need an RF free power source :P

I Dj'd in college, and pyramid was junk.... you think it'll be ok for this purpose?
I sure like the price...

Pyramid has been no problems for me.... plenty of juice......

So far my pyramid has worked fine, it does get hot if I don’t run a little fan on it but seems fine with or without the fan.

hey , I forgot to say that at 4.5 amp on both chargers the 1223 wasnt hot , just warm , so maybe I will try 5amps next

One thing to keep in mind is the weight of some of these power supplies. My MFJ has 45 amps cont. and only weights 5.7lb.

hey , I revised my post 7 up , there is one thing I for got to say , get a volt meter that can read (like) 20.78 , there is alot of volt meters that you can get pretty cheap at walmart that can do that , but it will do that under 20 v , it will have a 20v switch which means under 20 volts it will go to the hundreth like 19.99 , any thing over that you will need to set the switch to 200 v , and its in 10ths like 20.7. not like the flute which reads 20.78 , so both packs needs to be with in the .01 v margin. like 20.78 and 20.79 , I can fly . if not you will need to charge the lowest one till they are that close or you will swell up a cell. just a reminder yall . and to the newbies going from gas to electric

Tony,

What volt meter do you recommend? I'm one of those newbies going from nitro to electric. I'm number one on the Ion-X wait list at HeliProz!

Boy, if this works half as well as I think it wil, my Xtremes will be converted to electric!

Hey , Rob , you need one that can read 40 dc volts . like the Flute , its the best one to get . just dont get the ones that say 0-20 dcv , and 0 to 200 dcv , needs to be 0-40dcv
I have one that reads to 20 v so that not good enought for my 5s3ps which has 21v max, its good for after a flight :arggg: and good for my 3s3ps

Tony,

Where would one find this magical 40 dv volt meter?? ;)

Mike,

Radio Shack has a few meters that will do 40volts and show the voltage in 4 digits.

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F008%5F002%5F000&product%5Fid=22%2D813

That is one that will meet the requirements

29-Range Digital Multimeter

I vaguely remember Krause telling me you didnt need part of the servo mounting stuff for the servos due to lack of vibration>> did you guys use the grommets and brass sleeves???

Thanks, Mike

Rob and I both used the grommets and sleeves, this thing is very smooth but we could not bring our selves to leave this part off :)

hey , I use grummets and brass on mine , but in my rappy E I dont ,
man I just flew my fury conversion outside with my new cells 13s3p 6000s new gen 2 cells and the new 601 , and compaired with the gen 1 is a big inprovement , I cant do 3D but Im trying to get the nevers up to do them , I tested the heli out in the gym last night and flew at 100% gov and my guess 1900 to 2000 on the head , I put back in today 3500 on all 3 packs . so these batteries seam to last alittle longer compared to the gen 1s . today it was 25 degrees outside so the batteries never got above 70 degrees after 7 minutes of flying , I did blow my hat off when hovering about 10 in front of me and nosed her down and went full collective like dragging , DAMN , this thing rocks , cant wait for 3 more weeks , mississippi bound here I come , Fl. too . 5 weeks off from work and warm weather that I been missing will be nice, heli should blow off my shirt down there in the heat where the batteries like to run at
having fun after a month being down

Just to pass on some information on voltmeters. If you already have a Fluke they are more than capable of handling 0.1mV @ 1000 vdc.

that would make it a 7 1/2 digit DVM which only a very very few labs are going to have,
and maybe Augusto ;) but not a regular Joe.
