I am still a newbie and not completely understanding the battery thing. It
has been challenging for me. I fly rappy 30 and my trans has a 9.6 v nicad 600mah pack, receiver has a nimh 2200 mah. I just bought a new charger and power supply. How long do I need to charge these batteries for and at what rate. I don't really need to charge super quick, but would like to find a rate that is quick, but has some longevity.

The normal suggested is rate is C/10. For the 600 mah pack, that would mean charging at 60 mah for about 12 hours.
For the 2200 mah pack it would be 220 mah charge rate for about 12 hours. That is provided the packs are fully discharged.
C/10 = Charge rate at 10% of the batteries rated capacity. So a 10 hour charge would fully charge the battery at that rate. But usually need to go a couple hours more than 10 hours due to the efficiency of the charger during the charging process.
If you want to charge faster and still be reasonable.
Charge the 600 mah pack at 100 mah charge rate. Charge for about 5 hours.
The 2200 mah pack, charge at 500 mah charge rate for about 5 hours.

Well... 1000 mAh = 1 Ampere, same difference you simply stated it backwards.
Be careful of your settings on the charger, especially if charging at higher than 100 mAh with the battery in the transmitter, batteries generate heat while charging and you do not want to melt the back off your transmitter. (I've done that.. 1 Amp on a 600mAh pack)

so you are saying on a 600 mah pack I would need to set my charger to .1 amp , which equals 100 mah. Why does this have to be so confusing for me. LOL>> I do take it out of the trans as to not burn it up. thanks lamebird..

that's correct, .1 Amp
For a quick field charge, you can go as high as .5 Amp okay, just bear in mind that heat degenerates cells.. the more often you get them hot, the less cycles they will live.
Of course, you can go all Lithium Ion packs such as Duralites and go 12+ flights between charges.. just costs more up front.
