It ain't a Spectra, but... Is it possible to change the stock gear ratio of an X-cell Gasser #1005 to accomodate larger mainblades. Maybe some 800 size blades. Also would having metal blade grips be necessary using large blades?

It is possible to change the gear ratio in the #1005. You will need to slot the lower side frames and the lower frame rails so that the motor can be moved fore/aft. This will need to be done for the main mounting location and for the head mounting location as well. Dependant on how much you change the ratio you may even have to lengthen the upper frame slots at the upper clutch bearing block. With this complete it is a matter of changing out the main gear to make some ratio changes. If you also require to change the pinion gear, it may not be as easy. The old gasser clutch bell is set-up for the 14 tooth pinion and the newest pinions do not fit in the bell. You could call MA to find if they have any pinions to fit the old #1005 bell or get your clutch and bell updated so that it could use any of the pinions of the new models. A call to MA would be your best way to find out all about either of the venues.
