I'm planning to purchase a new radio for a T-Rex in the very near future, and was wondering if this would be a good option? A few of the questions that I cant seem to find definative answers to are:
1. Is 6 channels really enough to last awhile without wanting (needing) to upgrade to one with more channels?
2. I believe that this comes with 537 servos. Is .25 sec / 60deg going to be fast enough for sport flying, or should I not bother using the servos in the 'Rex?
3. I'm going to use a GY401 with a Digital servo on the tail. Am I losing some functionality by not having an extra channel to accomodate for the different modes of the gyro?
The reason that I am bogging over this so much is that I have the opportunity to get the Tx for about 200 dollars (seems like a good deal). But If I am going to be wishing for more channels, or a better Rx, or not being able to use the servos that come with it, then maybe my money would be better spent elsewhere?????
Thanks for the insight

Well, I am not terribly familiar with the Trex or electrics, but in general helis will use 6 channels. 2 for cyclic, 1 for collective, 1 for tail rotor, 1 for throttle, and 1 for gyro gain. If you want a governor adjustable from the transmitter, you need to have an extra channel for that. I don't know if electrics have a governor or not.
The 537 servos are standard servos, meaning that they have the standard size case. I would think you need to go for something smaller on a small electric like the Trex. I think JR makes a set for small electrics, but don't quote me on that. The transmitter with teh micro servos etc all bundeled together.
If I am not mistaken, the 401 needs the extra channel to discern between heading hold and normal mode and set the gain. There is no gain adjustment on the gyro its self, so I reckon the gain channel is mandatory.
The last consideration you will want to make is the features in the radio its self. Does the 6102 have 5 point curves, CCPM, etc. Make sure you get a radio that you can grow with.

The 6102 is a good radio. Several guys at my field have them set up with a T-Rex.
1. Is 6 channels really enough to last awhile without wanting (needing) to upgrade to one with more channels?
It is unless you plan to get into glow helicopters later and want to use the remote gain features of some gyros and governors. These do not require extra channels to function, just to be able to control the settings "on the fly" from the transmitter.
2. I believe that this comes with 537 servos. Is .25 sec / 60deg going to be fast enough for sport flying, or should I not bother using the servos in the 'Rex?
The 6102 is available in several configurations. You do not want 537 servos in a 'Rex. They are way, way too big and will never fit. One of the 6102 configurations includes 4 micro servos and a micro receiver (610UL). That is the version to get. It's sometimes referred to as the "Ultra Lite", or "Park Flyer" version. It retails for about $240.
3. I'm going to use a GY401 with a Digital servo on the tail. Am I losing some functionality by not having an extra channel to accomodate for the different modes of the gyro?
There aren't many choices for a digital servo on the tail rotor of a T'Rex. And, truth be told, I've been getting great performance with a GY240 and the new Futaba S3110 micrco servo - .10 sec, 22oz torque - and tiny. The 240 seems to work a little better with non-digital servos. If you still choose to go the 401/digital servo route, it will work with the 6102. You have an extra channel for the gyro (use the GEAR channel).
There are a lot of choices, and it can be very confusing. Just ask a lot of questions!

The Trex needs micro servos not standards.also the 401 comes with a standard servo as well. And you will need all micro servos. The 6102 is a nice radio. But if you deside to go bigger and want to run a govener on a glow heli you wont have enough channels to do it. The 9303 JR if your lookin at the JR line would be a beter way to go cost is higher but you won't out grow it. It will grow with you.
The Gy 240 is a better setup for the Trex But the 401 will work with there new micro digital servos.
