Just last weekend I finished installing new DS285MG servo's for cyclic and a DS290G on the tail and the G770 3D gyro. Going through initial setup and I wanted to verify that I have my settings on my DX7 set correctly for the gyro gain adjustment from the radio. In the DX7 system setup mode I have the input select set to gyro/gear. Then I have gyro sensitivity set to RUDD D/R which is manual mode. Now with this said this means that I use the RUDD D/R toggle switch on the upper right corner of the controller to switch between position 0 & 1 which I have set with different gain settings for the gyro. So does it sound like I have my DX7 setup correctly? So far so good and I'm really like this new setup with the new servo's and gyro. I'm also using the Align 335mm pro wood blades. Whole different heli with the better equipment. I'll add some pictures later. Thanks!

Something that I may have missed during my G770 setup. How do you adjust the travel for the tail servo using the travel adjust on the gyro? Do to move the rudder stick to the left and then adjust the travel adjust on the gyro until your 90 degrees off left of center then repeat for the right? Or do you start at mechanical center on the tail servo with all sub-trims and trim settings to zero then move the rudder left and right and then use the travel adjust on the gyro until the servo horn only moves 90 degrees left and right from center. Make sense? Thanks...

I have my DX7 set up so that throttle-hold is also rate mode and do the setup from there. (Mechanical) My DX7 is an airplane radio so the switches are laid out a bit different that the heli version.
As far as the radio setup goes, I just copied the suggested numbers for the Trex 450 and that was a good starting point. You might want to set the travel-adjust in the radio at 125 instead of 150…the speed of the piro scared me to death…and use plenty of expo to start. Like 60 or so. BTW 50 with the 770 is only equal to about 10% in this setup.
Center the tail servo travel in rate mode.
Hope this helps, in a bit of a hurry. Three day work marathon.

on my DX7 i use the gear channel for gyro. Then im able to go into travel adjust under gear and change the values easily. Im not sure but it would seem to me that using the throttle hold switch for gyro wouldnt be a good switch to use when theres other switches that can be used and how would you adjust the gyro? i would use either the gear channel or the aux channel. then that way you can adjust the gyro sens in the travel adjust menu.
i would also start with 100% for rudder under travel adjust to start then adjust from there. i dont use the 770 gyro, im using 401, but i know tail setup and what i do is plug in batt and let the servo center on its own. then put on the horn so that it is 90 deg from the tail. then mecanically adjust the servo by sliding it or adjust the linkage rod while in rate mode till the tail doesnt drift left or right. then adjust the end points on the travel adjust on the gyro so it doesnt bind on either side of the tail slider. the rudd travel adjust is for adjusting your pirouette rate and not the throw. you can move the ball link on the servo horn to adjust your throw also.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still alittle confused on the G770 gyro setup with my radio or I'm making it more confusing than it needs to be. :thinking What is the travel ADJ on the gyro for? Right now when I switch to HH mode the heli just starts pirouetting and I can't do anything with the sticks to stop it? Any idea what's going on?

EatMorePizza....I have the radio and servo setup sorted out. What type of gain you running for tail lock? Also how do I adjust the piro rate so that it is equal in both directions? Little by little...Thanks!

RC, please read parts 5 (Flight Setting) and part 6 (Pro Tips) of the manual. This will explain the setup procedure. I would copy and paste it here but the PDF file won’t let me do this.
I have not been able to spend a lot of time on “in-flight” setup because of work and weather but its not hard. In fact, using the recommended settings for the t-rex 450 worked fine in the flights I was able to make. The only thing left I have to do is set the piro speed which is done with a combination of gain, dual rates and travel adjust.
The 450 settings are: Gain 63, Travel Adjust 150/150, DR 65% and Expo 47%.
After my short attempts at setup I wound up with, Gain 61, Travel Adjust 125/125(in the tx), DR 65% and expo 55%.
It is not so cut and dry though. One thing affects another so you have to experiment and find the settings you like. Read the manual several times! As I said, I haven’t had enough time to iron all this out myself but the tail is holding fine.
Here is an electronic version of the manual.

The travel adjust on the gyro is for setting the distance the slider will travel from center (both ways). After you have mechanically centered the slider, use your rudder stick to move left and right to see how close you are to the end point of the movement. As you turn the tiny, and I mean tiny, adjustment on the gyro it will get closer or further from the ends. Just set it close, without binding, and your done. This is simply to keep the slider from jamming up and over driving the servo.
There is really too much here to cover on a single post but it’s all in the manual. I admit it is a bit confusing if you have never done it before but I again say read it several times and it will get clearer.
One more thing, I had a drifting problem on the first flights so I moved my 3400G to the boom and it solved that issue.
Also…Johnbs8, I am also using the gear channel for gyro. I was referring to the Auto sens for rate. No matter how I set it up it uses the rudder DR switch for activation. That switch is also my hold switch; upper right corner. One question though, how does adjusting travel adjust under gear effect anything…that is the gyro? I use rudder TA for the servo. If I’m wrong, please explain. Thanks.
Roger.

My gain is set to 58 lock and 30 rate
atv70-70
rudd expo 70
the tail link set a 8.35 mm from rudder servo.
I really changed the setup alot to achieve different results and I like this setup so far. Really its different for everybody but its a god start. I havent flown the 400 for sometime now, but I would change the rudd expo back to 90 considering Im getting better at flips. In the begining I would flip and add piro invulintarly. So I gave it some neg expo.
Use the atv adjustment to set your piro rate. You may use different numbers from left to right because the heli has a counterclockwise torque on it so the tail naturally would swing easier to the right.

Roger_15.....I've read the setup sheet I don't know how mant times. At one point the heli would piro CCW wildly. Issue was I had the servo position flip-flopped between the setting on the gyro and on the radio. Currently it's normal on the gyro and reversed in teh radio. When setting the D/R and Expo in the radio for the RUDD, do you use the same value for position (0=rate) and position (1=Tail Lock)?
I figured out the travel adjust on the gyro. I just need to double check it. That little adjustment tool that comes with the gyro sucks. Was you able to get the plus side of the tool to fit in the plus shaped pot on the gyro? As far as the CCW drift issue I'm having right now I'm going to re-do the tail setup again. I have my DS290G servo mounted on the tail boom but with the E-flite tail servo mounts and I still have the rubber commets on the servo. I read somewhere that the servo should be hard mounted to the tail boom mount to avoid tail drift. My DS290G servo gets pretty warm and I wonder if it's working too hard. Anyway thanks for the advice and help. Hopefully this weekend I can get everything sorted out. Thanks!

Do you have a BEC? Are you running the servo's at 6V?
