Been using mine for just over a year now.
I have 2 actually.
Just do a search on here and you will find a ton of setup tips for it.
Gear the head down for 1600 or so RPM and get the Stratus flybar carrier.
Call MA and get the doublers ordered for it just to add some strength to the mainshaft bearing blocks. Not really an issue unless you are flying the 800's, but nice to have IMO.

I would go Electric, I hace owned a few gas machines, and the E-Machine is as smooth as it is gonna get.

I have probably set up 25 machines for guys doing the AP thing, no complaints yet. I doubt though that a lot of them frequent this board as it is really more of a sport flying environment.
We can tailor the Ion pretty well for AP work, 36" boom setup, long blades, deeper gearing, frame stiffeners and different motor setups are all available.

Is there another forum that deals with AP work (hopefully including E-helis) besides runryder that would be suggested?

Pretty much the largest group of us that discuss helicopter specific AP are on RR.
I lurk on all of them. :D
Rcgroups.com has a big AP section, but there are a lot of plane flyers in there.
RCAPA.com/forums is the Radio Control Aerial Photographers Association. Very diverse disucssions on there from all kinds of platforms.
That is really about it right now.

I also fly an ION with round cells for AP. No complaints here.
