Is anyone else using the Sony NP-F570 battery in their 14MZ?
I have a Sony battery and I am on my second one.
The original Futaba battery is still working fine but I have noticed a slight drop in capacity.
In all fairness this could be from the cold.
But I just had my second Sony battery die on me.
I have 3 different chargers that will not charge it.
It is showing only 7.4V with no load right off the charger.
I alternate batteries so the Sony and the Futaba get used every other time out flying.
They both have been in the cold all winter.
When I put the battery in the TX it starts out at 37% remaining and the low battery alarm sounds at 20% about 10 minutes later, it only takes a couple of minutes in the charger for the light to go off and indicate it is charged.
Any thoughts on this?
Is it maybe worth it to spend twice the money on another Futaba pack or do I just have bad luck?

You have to be careful with the Sony Batteries, because most of them are aftermarket and are really crap. The Futaba battery is 2200Mah, and most of the NP-F570's I've seen out there range from 1600Mah to 2000Mah.
The real Sony NP-F570's I see are priced around $65, so there isn't all that much of a savings over a Futaba battery.
I know it sucks, but I just broke down and bought the second one for my 14mz.

I was curious about that same thing. I just got my 14 MZ so I've been playing with it a lot trying to learn the programming. I have a Sony camcorder and the battery in it looks identical to the Futaba battery except for the contact points. This is just my thoughts, but Lithium is Lithium, no matter whose name is on the case. I would think that if the capacity is right and the contact points work it should be fine. I bet the cold has something to do with your diminished capacity though. It's like the CF cards, I bought some extras at Best Buy for mine and they work just fine. They are half the cost of the Futaba ones too.

Yep,
I agree, if you get a True Sony battery, you should be in good shape. I looked around, and what the vendors claim is a NP-F570 is really the OEM case with cheap crap batteries inside.
I looked around (1 week ago) and if you read the fine print or look at the pictures / specs, you'll find the power ranges from 1600Mah to 2000Mah. I couldn't even find an aftermarket 2200Mah version of the battery.
Given that, being a Li-Ion battery, you'll definitely get a reduced time in the cold. I know my 4000 Mah duralites that give me around 10 flights during the summer give me about 5-6 flights in about 35F weather.
If your battery is dead that quickly, it may be a bad cell or a bad charger. I've had a Sony charger on my video do something similar, the charge circuit would cutoff before a full charge (more like after 1/4 charge). I bought a new charger and it was fine after that.

pilotError -- I had my 4000Mah duralite go from 10 flights to 5 flights and it was a bad cell. So if your duralite doesn't recover in the warmth of summer, look at a bad cell also.

The battery that I have is a genuine Sony from a major electronics store, it cost $50.
I am using the same charger and operating conditions for both the Sony and Futaba packs.
I even tried charging the sony pack in my Sony camcorder that uses the same batteries.
I agree with all that has been said about the aftermarket replacements for the NP-F570.
I do know that it is a bad cell I took the pack apart and did a charge and discharge on each cell.
One of the cells is at 506 mAh capacity the other is at 2132.
Now I wish I had not tossed the last bad pack, between them I could have built one good one.
I am thinking it is just my bad luck to have 2 packs go bad.
Although after 2 bad packs I may just order a Futaba pack $$.
I got my batterys from Wal-Mart, they were in a genuine sony package that says 2200 mah. I have been using all three (2 Sony,1 Futaba) with no problems or differences. The cost at wall to wall people mart is 59.00. I bought them because I did not want to wait on shipping.

My Sony F570 said either 2300 or 2500 mah on the package, which I no longer have.
So far it and the Futaba are working fine.

Well it sounds like it is just my personal black cloud following me around again.
Its off to Circuit city, they have the best local price at $58.
I need it for this weekend, no way one pack will get me through a whole day.

I use 1 Futaba and 1 Sony F570 and both work great-- never noticed any difference in battery life. I am cycling the Sony now to see what the capicity is.

The Sony F570 label states that the batt is 7.2v / 15.8 Wh
Mr OHM tells us that I=P/E
I=Current (amps)
P=Power (watts)
E=Pressure (volts)
So 15.8(P)/7.2(E)=2.194 or 2194 mAh (2200 mAh pack)
Wow Shannon you are a pretty fart smeller.

OK- the Futaba batt was charged fully on the factory charger, then discharged and recharged on my Orbit.
Discharge was 2017 mAh and charge was 2032 mAh.
Seems batts are equal or actually the Sony is a tiny bit better.

I charged Sony Np-F570 Battery with stock 14mz charger. It works well.
I have no problem at all with my 14mz radio.
