View Full Version : Beginner question about Ion or upcoming Proton batteries

This is my first post, so be nice. My english is also quite bad, but here goes nothing.
I only do easy sport flying, but later I want to do 3D. I was wondering if the Ion or Proton from MA will work on 5s, maybe 6? Or would this just be a unrealistic dream?
If I later deside to start doing 3D, I'll just put two 5s packs in serial.
The 10s setups are quite expensive. And maybe I'm not ready for an Ion or Proton if I can't pay for a decent setup.
What do you guys think?

I have run the Ion on 8S and it does very well on that, I don't think 6S would really be enough to do very well, the batteries would be very stressed, even on a 4P configuration. BUT, if you are looking to save up front money on the battery, why not just use round cells? 28 to 32 of those will push the Ion around very well and the pack cost for roundcells runs from $125 to $150 if you build them yourself.
The 50e will have no problem on 6S, I have not done it yet but I intend to before it is released. Again, roundcells would also work here.

Thank you for your reply Chris! You're in the MA team, right?
I had expected that the Ion would be a bit too big for 6s, but I had to ask to be sure. The Ion is a great machine.
I saw a video from IRCHA (I think) with the "Proton" v.3, and it looked sweet! I think thats the type of machine I'm looking for. I hope it will have the well known Fury shape canopy?
You say it will be no problem on 6s for the 50e, so I pressume that it'll be ok on 5s too? I'm hoping I don't have to buy a new charger.
I'm asking a lot of questions at the same time here...

Hey Bobby,
Did you stop flying those smoking oil dripping stink machines yet.

You will not regret it if you invest in a Ion-X....it flies like a dream.
If you want to save money, I would go for round cells to begin with, and then order the Ion-X with the NEU 1521 1.5Y, motor instead of the Hacker, so you don't have to upgrade the motor later.
In that way you have one of the best, if not the best e-heli on the market with a motor ready to rock. Then later you can upgrade all the radio gear and batteries.....think the lipo cells will drop in price in the future, so nothing wrong with just starting out with round cells. Have seen that there are 4200ma round cells on the market now, http://www.rc-unionen.dk/nytforum/uploads/Tommy%20persson/2005121823051_ib4200.jpg so even that they are heavier, they might still give 5-8 minutes in the air I guess.
Just what I would do.

Just out of curiousity, how many cycles can you expect out of a round-cell pack? I love the idea of an electric fury but found the li-po battery cost prohibitive. Also what charger would you use for charging that many round cells?
Thanks,
Angelo
Some more round cell info if interrested.

V-Max Plus RDS GP4300 packs will be available worldwide from your Team Orion dealer. Please immediately contact your dealer and make sure your packs are ordered from your national distributor.
Team Orion V-Max+RDS GP4300
Maximum runtime; very high voltage; very low IR. The best battery technology GP and Team Orion can offer at this moment. These batteries do not fade and have a very consistent high voltage discharge curve. Tested as the best battery for extensive high discharge conditions due to the enormous capacity.
Especially designed racing battery for 1/12 8m, 23t 8 m and any modified high current drain 5 minute motor class. Of course works great too in any other class. Great power and runtime if used with Team Orion V2 brushed technology.
Charge techniques and cycle life are similar to the GP3300/3700 series which guarantee outstanding quality and cycle life.
Available as:
ORI11047 - GP4300 - 1 cell
ORI11309 - GP4300 V-Max Spec (7.2V - 6 cells)
ORI11461 - GP4300 Racer (7.2V - 6 cells)
ORI11462 - GP4300 Team (7.2V - 6 cells)
ORI11465 - GP4300 Racer (4.8V - 4 cells)
ORI11466 - GP4300 Team (4.8V - 4 cells)
Charging advice: 5A – Peak 3mV/cell – 45deg C
BRCA/EFRA/IFMAR/JMRCA 2006 legal and available at your hobby shop end of January.
Please note: The recently released new Team Orion V-Max+RDS GP3700 SP2 will NOT be replaced by the new GP4300! See information underneath:
GP 3700 SP2: Great runtime - highest voltage - lowest IR on the market.
Specially developed by GP for the stock racer. To be used in 12t - 19t – 23t - 27t or any 5 minute racing class with a motor limit. The lowest IR in the market guarantees maximum acceleration, the highest Voltage gives maximum top speed. Extremely fast VRT (Voltage Recovery Time) to warrant maximum acceleration and top speed at all times!
Available as:
ORI11045 - GP3700SP2 - 1 cell

When I flew roundcells in this heli, I would see 100 to 150 cycles on a pack. With the Neu motor, geared at 20:1, I'd think you could get easily 8 minutes on those batteries, gear a little deeper and even more...Sheesh, I had no idea round cells had been bumped so high in capacity. The last good cell I flew was the HRSC 2600 cell and I could get 5 or 6 minutes from those. This is of course more sedate levels of flying, turning the head down at like 1600-ish average. I think I may have to re-visit this stuff and see what there may be to be had.

Sweet!!!! I am very interested to hear the results of your testing as are quite a few people I would presume. Thank you!! :noteworthy

It's actually kind of interesting: If you work on the assumption that a 2S LiPo pack is the equivalent voltage as a 6S NiMH pack, then to get 4200 mAh you would need a 2S2P LiPo pack vs. a 6S1P NiMH pack.
In other words, The NiMH pack is about double the weight and half the price of a LiPo pack of the same capacity.
Personally I'm kind of waiting to see what A123 comes up with. I know DeWalt will be releasing some 36v tools in the near future. 5-minute recharges and 100C burst! Can't wait to rip apart those babies!

Hey skippy for now yes but when the time changees i will fly a slimer again only because i can go out for 1 houre after work and get a good 4 to 5 flights in
But the way teh NEU is flying i might just have to retire my glow
Ima curious on the battereis as well it will take alot to knock down the power of 15c TP prolites

Really interesting about those round cells, sounds like a OK low-budget choice.
But I'm waiting for the 50e. Thing is we haven't heard about it for a while now! I want some news about the Proton I saw in that video!

Well, what can I tell you? The first variant had an 866 sprag clutch and a torque tube driven tail, also it was electric only, two stage and weighed around 7.31 Lbs AUW with a 4000mAHr 10S pack, 9650's and no canopy. It flies well but does have a few quirks.
The new version will have a belt driven tail, no 866 sprag ( yes the tail will be constant driven). It will also be adaptable for either electric or glow. Main reduction is still looking like 2 stage for either power setup. The weight needs to come down, of course the belt driven tail helps this, from where the first variant was. Right now things are pretty much up in the air, so being able to determine final form is impossible other than what I have said so far.

Tim had yhe prototype carbon belt drive tail box at Clint's B-Day. He would not let any pics be taken, but it is awesome and VERY light, looks very strong and VERY simple in design. I think they can make it all in-house as well, so the pricing should be very good.

Hmmm...well I don't know how I feel about a Carbon box for the camera ship, but we shall see.
I would rather see an aluminum one similar to the open box now only with a belt back there.
Something simple and robust.
Also if you went with a single pully back there "ala Raptor" you can easily change the tail rotor ratio. Especially if it is an open box style.
