Because of the fixed position for the starter shaft bearing block, you need to use gears that have the same distance between shafts. The two choices you end up with are the 85T/10T combo in the Raptor 50, or the 86T/9T set from the Raptor 30. Our setups are optimized to use the 86T/9T combination.

We've been playing with the new Hacker A50 outrunners, and the performance is every bit as good as the other setups based around the NM 1912-1.5Y and/or an Actro 24-4. The "secret" is that the Hackers have 14-poles, vs 8-poles for both the Actro and the NM, so it has even lower resistance, at a given kV, and thus more torque. This allows the same sort of high performance without requiring a change to the Raptor 30's 86T/9T gearset. Check out the video we did last weekend with a completely stock Raptor 50 SE that has an AUW close to 9 pounds:

http://www.tppacks.com/video/Raptor%2050%20A50-12S%2010s2p-4200%20PL%203-19-06.wmv

The best thing about these motors is that they are very inexpensive compared to other high performance motors in this class. The retail price of the motor itself is $150. I'm now offerring a combo package with the complete conversion kit for $179. That's $30 less than the price of a NM 1912 by itself. :) I'm also offering a package with the kit, the motor and a 10s2p-4200 Pro Lite pack for $679.

To save even more money you could use this same motor with an 11s-3000 setup of the eMoli/V28 "tool" cells. These 7-cell V28 packs have been going for $80-$90 on eBay. Potentially, this means it will be possible to have a complete, very high performance Raptor 50 conversion, costing well under $500 total, that includes the motor, conversion kit, controller and batteries. That's not bad. :)

Gary,

What sort of flight times for mild aerobatics with the 10S setup and the A50-12S are you getting

We are getting about 7-8 minutes of hard 3D and 8-10 minutes of basic aerobatics, like loops and rolls. I'm guessing it will also do 12-15 minutes of hover practice/basic FF.

thanks for the reply,
I'm thinking of converting from IC and as i have a 50 already, i might as well use it
Can i use the 85/10 gearing i have already and use a 8s battery or go your route and use the 30 gearing

WOW that usre beats the hel out of the 6 minutes maximum for any type of flying with the V2 Box and the C50-15XL!!! Excellent!!

Because of the lower kV of this motor, compared to the NM 1912-1.5Y and Actro 24-4, you can use the standard R50's 85T/10T gearset. You really need to look at a 10s setup, however, to get enough power and decent durations.
