First off, since all I fly is MA helicopters, I haven't tried this on other machines but don't see why it wouldn't work. On recent kits or rebuilds I've been taking the main and tail shafts and polishing them to as high and smooth a shine as possible. Occasionally I was having either a brass tail bushing or swash plate not feel quite as smooth as I thought they should be. On the swash plate it won't always show up unless it's bad but on the tail it will show up as a tail wag. That's not only a nuisance to find but also hard on a tail servo. On a few machines I've done this to, I've been able to turn the gain down on a 601 or 611 from 38 to 33 and not have any change in how it holds. After polishing the tail shaft, I use a very small amount of tri-flow on the shaft and it is silky smooth. I've also put a small amount on a few main shafts after the polishing but really didn't notice much difference. The main thing on the main shaft is the smooth polished surface. So, if you're having in consistent operation of the tail on a machine, give the polishing a try. It's really helped mine.

Gary,

That is a great suggestion. What are you using to polish with?

I've got polishing wheels on a bench grinder and compounds for different materials. Once I get one polished up to a high luster, I haven't had anymore sticking problems.

there is a brand of polish called Autosole. not sure if you guys get it over in america.. i am sure you would but it is EXCELLENT for turning a crappy looking burnt muffler into a shiny million dollar one hehe..

but its also good to use on flybar that start to get that ugly rust on them..

good suggestion Gary :) !

Hi al,

I'm a noob with an older X-Cell (1003). I have a wag problem, and was interested in what you're doing. When you say you polish the tail shaft, are you talking about the part that rotates inside the boom? Or honing/polishing out the boom or both? Thanks in advance

-TreyThe actual output shaft. You will need to remove the tail hub and shine up just the part outside the case to take advantage of this.
