I got in a bunch of slights today. The 550 flew 4 times. I let one of the local hotshots fly it today and it was very impressive to say the least. Well for about 3 minutes anyway.

About 3 minutes into the flight I noticed the head-speed had dropped a bunch and I told him that's not right we'd better land. Good thing we did. The battery was 160*F plus and cell 1 was puffed.:wow2: The battery pack is an Outrage 6S 3300 25C, motor is a Scorpion -1210, ESC is a CC80 and I'm geared 20-68-20-61 for about 2300 head speed. The pack in question has about 15-20 flights on it and is about 2 months old.

The only real difference is he was flogging it a lot harder than I do. However, the batts should have been able to handle 80A surges. Shoot, the motor will only pull about 80A. First of all, the battery un-puffed at the field when it cooled down. I also did some checking on the battery tonight at home. Cell 1 is way off, .120V, no way this pack will ever balance. I gotta call HeliDirect tomorrow.

Also, this was the last weekend the 550 flew with the 8717s/8900G setup. I took the servos off tonight and put in DS821s on cyclic and I put a 3500G on the tail. I'm still using the Spartan gyro though. I'm sticking with an 8V system with the Spektrum 5.2V step down for the tail. I'll let you guys know how this setup works as soon as I test it.

The other thing I might do is try the long boom and the 550 blades. If I decide to do that, I'll probably drop a tooth or 2 on the pinion to get the head-speed down to 2200 or so. That will be after I build and fly my T600N though. (Guess where the 8717s/8900g are going.)

No crashes lately, but my helis have been keeping me busy.

that's too bad about the outrage- seems like a lot of them have been puffing lately :bomb:

Wow Mike. That sounds like an action packed day :). The nice thing is that helidirect will hook you up and have a new pack sent out to ya in no time.
I'm kinda surprised that you are at 2300 HS with a 20, 68, 20, 61 setup with that 1210 motor. I'm running 22, 68, 20, 61 with a z30 1110 and figured that my HS was between 2200 and 2250.. but maybe its a bit more at 100% if you have tached your setup at 2300. I did notice today after 4 flights back to back that the 68 revco gear is showing some signs of wear, just like the stock ok 42t did in the 14, 42, 20, 61 setup at 100% flat after a series of flights doing full hit tic tocs. Looks like i might be going back to the 14, 42, 20, 61 setup, but running it at 90% flat since that worked well without tearing/wearing out the 42 gear much at all. The 13, 42, 20, 61 at 100% flat also worked "OK", but it felt kinda soft during harder flyin'. Yes, please let us know if you setup the long boom and blades with it. :cheers
*BTW, i have 35 flights on each Outrage 6S 25C 3000mAh pack now with no puffing at all. I run them hard for 4:30 flights and i can feel them fade a bit after the 3 min mark. I've never put back more than 2350mAh, and balance them during and check them again after charging. I guess another option would be for me to replace the revco 68 with a new 68 and then drop down to 21t and run 100% flat. :dontknow

2250 is about right with an 1100kV motor. I think I got about that with the Gaui 1100kV motor.

I get 2150 with the FP Evo 30 pack, but it has about 100 flights on it. The Outrage just puts out more voltage. (I checked with a data logger - it was amazing.) Oh yeah, I run a 100-95-100 throttle curve with that setup.

I plan to get the Hurri out today. Mostly trim flights since I changed all the servos last night.

I actually put the pack on the charger. IMHO, it didn't come back. First I did a 50% storage charge on my TP-610c and the bad cell was running about .060V high. When that finished I checked the balance and it was .012V high (OK so far). Then I put the charger back on 100% charge and it when up to .120V high and started climbing. I stopped the charge after about 5 minutes because it was never going to balance.

Right now the battery is not puffed and it's about 60% charged. I have it in a lipo sack just to be safe.

Bummer dude, the Ohio Gaui Electrical Curse seems to be migrating! :arggg: :arggg: :arggg:

That pack should be able to handle 82.5 amps normally, let alone surge; did you have an FDR on there to record your flight and give the exact amounts? That 1210 motor will pull more then it's rated for, I think it's 'top' was supposed to be 60 amps but we know how that goes...

Call HD and get a replacement... So have Outrage packs of recent been having this problem? Bummer but there's their super replacement policy to take care of issues like this, too bad it has to be used but at least you were SMART and landed the bird.

Actually Forrest P was flying it. (Forrest Gump on RCGroups). He was hammering it pretty hard. Lots of blades farts. Took an hour for the swelling to go down.

Will call HD this morning. Got the Battery on 8/8 so it's w/ the 3 month window. The battery I got on 7/28 has about 3 more cycles on it and is going strong.

I was looking at the XP25 6S 3700, but it probably won't fit under the canopy even with the canopy raised a little. How2ever they have it in a 3S, so maybe I can get 2 3700 3S for a replacement and just pay the difference.
