are there any upgrades I should make to this heli right off the back, I'm new to this

Actually, it's a pretty decent introductory machine. Add some mid-range servos, and the torpedo speed muffler and you are pretty well set.
Spend time on the setup, and you should have no problems...

what engine you going with the TT .39 or the OS .37 either way is good choice the speed torpedo is a good cheap muffler and works great on the TT .39.

Entry level digitals would be good as well JR 811's or the futaba's line.
Other than that I didn't need any with mine. some SAB, or Mavaric blades Cheap and descent if going to do 3D.

The best you can get is the gy401 combo w/ servo around $199. can't go wrong with it and it will move with you as you progress to maybe a 50 but not much more than a 50.

If you can afford it, spend more money on the gyro than the heli-motor combination. It will or should last a lot longer than any cheap-assed gyro you may find.
The 401 is a good gyro, but the 601 or 611 is better...
