View Full Version : Ion X Headspeed too low????
Hi Guys,
I tached my Ion X today and my headspeed was 1800 at mid stick O .
The setup :
Gear 20:1
Neu 1521
MAH 700 G2
Duralite 10s3p 6450
V curve 100 95 100
+10 -10
Hacker 77 :
0 deg. of advance
8khz
initial and end point on auto
t. curve linear
timing on.
I'm using the single stage gear and pinion with a 20:1 reduction.
All atv and subt. are 100%
What's going on ?? Maybe something is wrong with the esc? I think I should be getting about 2000 from this setup??
Anyway the heli flys extremely well but I want a little more headspeed.
What do you think????
Thanks,
epc2.

Try changing the initial endpoints in the ESC and not using automatic. I had the same problem with mine, but I went to the CC HV-110 and no more problems before trying the endpoints, ChrisS can tell you what to set them on.

Try 5% on youre timing and go to a straight line on throttle 100,100,100,100
also make sure you are not in governer mode

I think I have mine in Governor mode, If in heli mode isn't the Governor mode automatic??

yea i think the governer is default in heli mode you got a program box?

yes I do !
Let me know How to disable the governor , I think that's where the problem is!

If it is in governor mode, you should hear the motor speeding up and slowing down over and over while flying, like it cannot hold a steady headspeed, or surging. Good point Bobby. I turned on the heli on the wrong model in the TX once, and the 77-O reset itself to Governor mode. I called Bobby on the phone and he knew immediately it was in GOV mode dude to teh surging. Reporgrammed it withthe programmer and fixed it on the spot. Thanks Bobby!!
Flew the Ion today and :
Tried 6deg. of advance , flat throtle curve @ 100% , confirmed that the 2nd gear is a 52t , played with the ATV's and the headspeed was 1770.
:? :?:
I'm thinking that maybe I have a ESC problem or prog. box problem???
I have a Jazz 55-10-32 that maybe I can use just to tach it and check if it's an esc related problem or not , I know is not enough esc for the Ion but just for taching it should be Ok.
What elese come to your minds guys???
Thanks,

Did you try changing the initial endpoints from auto to manually specified? That would probably fix the problem. PM ChrisS for the proper endpoints.

epc2,
Just out of curiosity, what connectors are you using between your batteries and ESC? You might be experiencing 'insertion loss' due to poor connection(s).
Also, several of us at my local field have test flown some of the Duralite batteries in our 20%+ fixed wing aircraft with mixed results. Are these batteries new and if so, how many cycles are on them? Another thought is cold battery temperatures, you may already know this but you can have up to a 20%+ difference in power output from LiPoly cells running them cold (meaning less than body temp.). Try warming (~ 100°F) them up and see if that makes a difference.
Good luck in finding a solution.

Baja 170 , No they're on auto.
Wild Moose, I'm using Deans connectors and they're soldered very well , And 3.5mm MP jet Gold Plated between motor and ESC.
The batteries are practically new with about 15 cycles , I know about the cold weather but no problem with that here.
Thanks,
epc2.
Update:
Guys I feel very stupid but last night I Checked the secondary and I'm sure I saw 52 , Guess what , I removed the battery tray to have a better look at the gear and my secondary is 55t. :arggg:
I think that that's where the problem is.
thanks everybody for their suggestions.
What do you guys think should I get a 50 or 52.

What is your flying style?

Hello EPC2
I spoke with Carlos today and we talked about this. For your flying, for now, I'd recommend that you leave on what you have. A high headspeed is not going to do anything for you at this point and the taller gear will give lower headspeeds which means longer flights, which is what you need right now...nice, easy going flying characteristics. You can always change the gear later on when your ready for more power.
