Travel, TSA, and batteries

Now granted I have never owned an exploding laptop. Nor have I had a LiPoly explode on me for no reason. But for the life of me I am finding it hard to believe that some carrying (2) LiIon camera batteries with me tomorrow on the plane is somehow safer than having them stored in the case they were designed to be in.

Especially when if you leave the battery attached to the device it is not considered a problem

The thought is... that if there IS a fire that the crew will be able to deal with it. Unless, of course the battery that decides to catch fire is the one on the device.
