450 Sport arrival

Posted 12-01-2009 at 06:28 PM by nielsm

My T-Rex 450 Sport arrived today from HeliDirect. I have to say I'm impressed with HeliDirect. This was my first order from them (mostly been A Main Hobbies & LHS) & they were very responsive on any questions & sent out updates in a timely manner. One big advantage for HeliDirect is I live on the east coast, so ground deliveries from them arrive as quickly as cheap air shipping from California.

One strange thing was the shipping box had an Align electrics box with the servos, esc, motor & gyro outside the main Trex box. The Trex box was sealed, so at first I thought I got an extra set of electronics, but upon opening the Trex box, the electronics were not in there, so not sure why the items were removed & resealed, but it all appears to be there nonetheless.

On to the kit...

This is my first heli build in ~20 years, since my Kyosho Concept 30. My other current birds are RTF-type & while nice to get in the air quickly, lack the precise fit & finish of a higher quality kit.

First glance at the Trex kit shows everything nicely organized. Reminds me more of a Tamiya kit than the bunch of bags thrown in a box typical of most kits. The bags themselves are not quite up to Tamiya labeling quality, but at least there is a label. I've had kits where you had to sorta guess what was inside. There have been a lot of unboxing pics on the net, so I won't bother with adding those pics here.

The rotorhead comes assembled, though I'll tear that down to ensure threadlock & smooth movement. A metal head is a nice change... even my old Kyosho had a plastic head. Coming at it from the perspective of someone out of helis for a long time, it's amazing to see how much better the fit & finish is now than it was 20 years ago. Amazing to think considering how much bigger my Concept 30 was, that the precision in this head is as good as it is given the size. Granted the Concept 30 was an entry level bird at the time, the Sport seems to be Align's entry level for the 450 class & the quality level between the two is pretty vast.

Canopy is a pleasant shape, nice size up from my CP Pro 2, but still quite a bit smaller than my old Concept 30. Still adjusting to how much smaller helis can be found nowadays, though I like the flexibility their size allows for where you can fly.

Overall, the kit looks well thought out & thumbing thru the manual, appears to offer lots of detail & tips on the build. Hopefully I'll have time this week to start on the build.

Glad your kit made it in good shape!! Now on to the build!!

I get just as much enjoyment building the models as I do flying them....even after a unfortunate event with Terra Firma.
