HK-450 Flights #11-12: Maintenance mishaps (crash #3)
Flew the HK-450 in the evening. There were some maintenance mishaps that I had that led to 2 crashes one after the other. I'll count them as one crash.
I had replaced the tail rotor shaft with a 48mm long one from CNCHeli in order to try to get more travel and because the old one seemed considerably out of true. I hadn't quite properly set it up for the test flight and the tail wasn't holding without some effort.
On a spool-up, the bird leaned over and the blades hit the ground. This caused an aileron servo to strip.
On the last flight of battery #11, the tail gave way and the bird went into the side of my garage. The wood blades snapped. Feathering shaft seems ok. Main shaft seems ok. Flybar shaft was bent back into shape.
After that, I fixed everything up and it seems like it was flying OK for all of battery #12.

So, would you recommend one of these? Obviously none of your head parts have been destroyed or damaged, and I think thats pretty good. I've been thinking about buying one of these.Posted 04-25-2009 at 08:42 AM by iflymyhelishigh
