MS60 No offense taken, I;m a firm believer in proper control of the heli. Building a solid foundation first, based on orientation skills. Just flipping / flying the heli around and not actually controlling where it is or ends up doesn't impress me. I'm gonna redo and follow the directions i.e. 20 sec, 15 sec etc then redo, then I want another critique!!

Thanks,

dpelletier I was not criticizing your skills, we actually fly same style...
I think I'll try it as soon as our mountains of snow melt.

MS60 OK back to the drawing board!

dpelletier Finless is kind of taking a well deserved break from the forum life after all that he has put into this.
But if you don't mind I'll comment.
You fly well and have pretty good command of your helicopter.
However you did not execute the challenge.
Challenge #1 was to hover upright in all orientations for 15 seconds each before moving to the next.
And once that completed, if you choose, to do a slow piro over one spot.
It's really hard! Not to mention that it is difficult to not just fly off and do something more lively.

Grade request from BobO

OK Bob,

I looking for a grade here. Not anywhere near an A+ but maybe a passing grade? Keep in mind that van on the right threw me off at one point.

X3 hover practice (4 min 11 sec)

big_jim I have returned to helis after about a 5 year hiatus. Here is my attempt at the challenge. Befor I stopped flying I was able to do FF, loops, rolls and a little bit of inverted hover (way up high). I never really learned node in hover, so this challenge was a good place for me to start learing to fly again.

this was filmed with a gopro so my heli showed up really small, it is best viewed on a big screen.
Flight challenge #1 (4 min 29 sec)

CoolKD Nice nose-in for as long as it lasted. It's very hard to get over the mental side of things when it comes to nose-in.

Russell Harding Thanks guys. Maybe I'll put another one up after some more practice.

And then I'll move onto Challenge #2 and #3...

jamesb72 I think thats a great attempt with an MCPX, clear hover in all directions and you were correcting constantly, all this practice will pay off when you move up to a bigger heli which will be so much more stable you will find it 2nd nature.

Nice!! Maybe I'll break out the mCPX this weekend and give that a try.

Russell Harding Here is my attempt.

The challenge is a good example of how hovering is a different skill than forward flight.

I've only had the mCPX for less than a month, and only been flying RC Helis for less than six weeks. I've put in about 70 hours on the sim and can in real life I can do lazy eights, circles and a really messy nose-in inverted 'hover' and back flips now.

Forward flight is a no-brainer these days and I have a blast at the local park when the wind is calm. I thought hovering in the house would be easy, but like I said, it is a different skill.

I'd give myself a 5/10 for this one, and I kinda panicked and had a little crash at the end.

Bob O Indoor helis are fine as long as it's a CP model.

R_C Addict As soon as the weather get warmer here in Maryland, I will submit a vid unless I can use an indoor heli, the I'll try to get a vid in the next couple weekends or one night after work.

PilotSmith I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread! It has taught me that 1) I'm much worse at flying than I already knew I was, and 2) My heli was set up too hot for my skill level.

As a result of this I dialed in more exp and slowed down my head speed a bit. The heli is now much more enjoyable for me to fly. I feel like I am in control now rather than reacting to phantom forces mystically moving the heli in unwanted directions.
