Default Outrage 550 build HINT and TIPS

Hi folks, I thought it would be a good idea to sum up all of our good hints and tips in a single thread for new 550 owners. Here is what I think will work as far as formatting goes, Include a photo and a brief description of how to do the mod and what it improves. If we keep it to one tip per post the thread will easier to follow/read.

Alrighty, lets get this started. First off is how to fix that wobbly pulley. This one is for those of us who cant get a hold of the new white delrin replacements. Just use a tiny washer between the two shells that form the pulley. The tiny washer will be hold in place with the screws and will move the pulley halves just far enough apart to prevent the belt from hitting the rim. I believe some folks have had good luck with boiling water and bending them back into shape, but i havent tried this one myself yet.

On a heli this large i like to do a proper job on setting up the head and eyeballing the flybar level just doesnt cut it for me. So i created a little flybar lock out of some alum angle and hand tools.

OK, this next one is a safety one. The tip comes from Trexflyer02 (He is in the witness protection program) on the G5 Hints and tips thread. If you have ever seen what happens when a boom support comes loose ....

I wish i could claim this one, but my flying buddy Glen taught me this one and its FANTASTIC. This will work on any canopy and saves them. Use some shoegoo around the grommits on the canopy, it remains rubbery so it has some give. The shoegoo prevents the grommits from moving around and slowly openning up the holes in the FG.

Have you ever noticed a sqweeking sound when flying your 550 and couldn't find anything loose and the tail was as smooth as ice on glass ?? Well i have and it took me awhile to figure out it was the pushrod slidding thro the guides !! So i drilled out the guides just a tiny bit and no more noise.

OK here's my easy battery securing tip. I know after I mentioned it before some people tried it and said they didn't like it, but its worked great for me, my batteries don't move a bit.

Put Hook side (rough side) Velcro on both the battery tray and the battery. This gives a very good friction hold as long as the two surfaces are held tightly together, so secure the battery firmly to the tray with two good velcro straps. I use one at the front, and one just behind the bottom canopy mounting post. Obviously this technique relies on the straps being tight and secure, but that's not hard to do.

Undoing the straps allows the battery to be removed really easily.

Default 550 BIBLE

Not sure how helpful this will be.. since most who buy this heli will NOT be newbs... and I didn't organize it very well. KEY links to important threads and especially the scattered FBL info.

New gear yes, plastic one.
Upgrades, none needed.
Tail blades and paddles included. Some people change paddles, I went FBL.

I had trouble with the one-way bearing breaking (twice) and HD made me check if I had the sleeve with the "Outrage" name engraved, identical to the Velocity 50 one. I didn't, and the replacement I bought didn't either. They are sending me one free of charge. Check yours before going out to fly.

I have a tip!! Pay VERY close attention when disassembling the main gear assembly. The small washer the goes between the one way bearing and the middle main shaft bearing is commonly lost and not easy to replace. This may sound pointless but trust me when I say this happens often and will shut your flying down for quite some time.

Default ESD Countermeasure

Here's one way to minimize static buildup and prevent electrostatic discharges that can interfere with your electronics. Drill a hole in the bottom of the boom to accept a short bolt. Run a wire between the bolt and the lock nut of one of the belt guide pulleys. Then run a wire from the under the lock nut or from the screw in the boom to one of the bolts in the motor mount. To tie the boom to the tail case, file the coating off the end of the boom and the inner perimeter of the tail case.
