Default back in gaui 550 paradise, for a minute i guess hehe

Well if it's not one thing (crashes/'idiot-ness' ), it's another freaking part failures. At this juncture bearing failure which lead to heat, unknown to the pathetic heli addict, who diligently undertakes its replacement only to find that merely re-seating it and the bolts deforms the bearing and ruins it in one revolution. So great now I need to buy more bearings, and an entire new frame. did I mention I hate part failures. So uh, remember to test your new bearings as you re-seat them if there is evidence of excessive friction from the previous failure.

I'm in the same boat man. Just got the 550 plastic frame all buttoned up after a crash only to lose power mid flight and I had to plonk it down unceremoniously in the grass. I suspected OWB but it turns out I hadnt tightened my 13t pinion down enuff.

The squealing noise as I landed was just awful. Now thanks to a dab of gorilla glue on the motor shaft in addition to some blue loctite on the grub screws, that pinion is going nowhere.

I'm holding off on new bearings till I get a CF frame. Thinking hybrid ceramic since full ceramic is WAAAAY too expensive.

Default yeah pretty much...

I can chalk up a few more on the board as well. After the OWB shaft bearing and frame were replaced, my next OWB only lasted two flights(previous one ~20?), sorted it and and a main gear goes like 6 flights later. I killed that OWB with oil definitely: was running hot and I figured "what the hell", and put a tiny micro drop of oil that came with my braun razor just above the OWB, BAM, done, last flight out of that OWB. Pop in the spare.

Thankfully I have been landing in TH for a few years now and so luckily all these incidents have been costing me is down time and spares. So now I have the new frame ( the old one may actually be OK as I found a piece of the old bearing stuck into the housing that must have deformed the new bearing), new bearings, 450 shaft collar on my motor, everything lock-tighted, single washer below, proper gear mesh and belt tension. OWB still runs warm on its first flight, hot by the second but seems to be holding up in terms of smoothness. So then stripped the main-shaft gear instead. Probably an overload issue I guess at this point as I have a 2s a123 2300mah rx bat, hobbywing 120 hv, z30a, custom steel landing gear, tip weighted 550s, and 3300 and 3700 mah mains and FG canopy. Just a frickin hog. Oh well maybe a diet is in order. I love the power and mass, it flies awesome and it's only the ESC, RX bat and blades that weigh more than when I got 3 hours out of her with no hickups, so it doesn't seem like that much more load but maybe it is.

Hey man just get some more bearings already, they are like sweet tasty cheap crack with no ill health effects!

You really don't seem to be having any luck - are you still using the Gaui OWBs or have you tried the (much better) VXB bearings ?

Never tried the VXBs. I'm afraid to even fly it because I can't afford to fix any type of failure right now.

Well I got some "TRI-FLO" into those OWB and shaft bearings and what do you know it lowered the temperature by almost 50 degrees F. I do love to fly the 550 but I really start to understand the quote "the more money you have up in the air, the less fun it is". Now those of you with TDRs and such, fine maybe not for you guys, but guys like me who are known to metaphorically squeeze a nickle until it goes nova and turns into a neutron star... "ah git right angshus wheen muh chopper goes a bit whonky".

Mike,

I just ordered the VXB bearing, how do you get the old 19T gear on it? Are they loctighted together so I can heat, remove and lock tight on the new bearing. I'm still fairly new at this.

Thanks

TB,

The OWB will probably just press out - the easiest way is to use 2 sockets of different sizes, one that will hold the outer gear and a much smaller one to push on the OWB. Best to refit with threadlock. Also the 20T gear is stronger than the 19T so it might be worthwhile upgrading to one of these also.

Best wishes,
Mike
