I have my main sensor boom mounted, out of 'striking distance' bad news is blades caught the wires and cut one. I soldered back together, bench test is good although I suppose I should send in for repair?

This post compels me to ask a potentially stupid question so bare with me.
I recently cut and soldered all three wires from the main sensor to eliminate the plug form having to extend it to install on my 550e. Is there any reason this should cause a problem? Bill |

Shouldn't cause an issue with the function, but why not just use an extension?

Thank you for the reply.
I did use an extension but I wanted to get rid of the connector between the extension and main sensor in the middle of the boom. I covered it in black plastic mesh because I liked the cleaner look. Bill |

As you please, what ever works for you
Personally I have 13 CPII setups all of which required extensions on the sensors and have yet to have any disconnect during flight in over 2 years.

Hummmm, now wouldn't you think FMA would increase the length. My 'guess' is well over half use extensions.

in the fine print it states "extension may be requried" ( a life long problem)

What would a pilot do with all the excess wire say if it were designed to fit a 600 class and fitting it to a smaller helicopter? The old attage " you can't please everyone" so easier to add than take away.

No problem with soldering if done properly and shrinktubed afterwards. I would suggest moving the sensor forward so it's out of boom strike zone on the inside rather than outside, this will protect wires as well as the sensor in the future mishaps.

I really can't fault FMA for this one. There are so many different birds out there with so many different boom lengths using so many different blade sizes. Then you add to that, all of the good folks doing custom work. I think it would be hard to make a "one length fits all" cable.
