Default 250 any fun?

Hi There,

I’ve been flying RC heli’s for some time, had a Lama, then moved to a Belt CP and sold it, since then been flying a Raptor 50 N and love it. It’s been three years since I purchased a new heli (have some planks though) but looking for something fun, cheap to run and to help stretch my skills. So thought of trying out a 250 or even a 450. How many of you fly larger helis and enjoy the 250, are the smaller birds any fun? Space is not my issue, I have a huge yard (live on a farm) and my living room is big enough to fly a 250 (no 3D). What I want to know is the fun of owning a 250 long lived or does one get so annoyed with the little heli that one eventually wishes one never purchased one? Do the fly good 3D or are they better scale flyers.

I would go FBL, and should I go complete kit or should I use my own electronics?

Do they need upgrades from the build up?

Thanks,

I'm new to the 250 and I love it. Been flying for a little over a year and for me this heli makes me look better than I really am! Plenty of thread about the terrible quality of Aligns bearing, soft screws ( heads strip out easily ) I' m in the process of replacing them. Lastly there is an issue with tail blade binding/sticking but that can be fixed easily and you can do a chinese weight mod for the tail as well. I haven't needed any of that yet, but it is next on my list. Here is the thread where I was asking about tail wag. http://helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=396973. Imo you'll love her she is alot of fun and I feel very stable.

250 clones or what have you . are nuts .. i have one and it is ok . i wouldnt do it again as there a pain to tune up .. lots of tail issues if you read around in here . you will see up top is sticky threads .. one is tail wag .. and many other issues..

iam waitin for the 300 to come to stock . might try one of them .. more or less the blade SR upgraded to belt whitch was a long time comming ..
its RTF and BNF i think .. and for the same if not little less then the headaches a 250 will give you ..

now not to say . some folks love them but me no i dont like it ..

Think you said it all with CLONE . LOL then you have to find electronics that are compatible going that root. I did fine as a newb with my stock 250 se super combo with the help of the freaks.

But have you considered the MCPX? it is a blast of a heli to fly.

As you can see from my sig, I have a few helis of different size. By far I have the most fun flying the 250. Was it a pain in the ass getting the tail way figured out...YES. Is it small and fast... YES. Was it a pain in the ass with these 50 something eyes to build... YES.

But it's a blast to fly as it's very cheap to fix. I got it when they first came out, so it's V1 with no upgrade except weighted tail grips.

You will also rething the statement about flying it in your house, I have room in my house, but after the first time trying to fly in my house I had to change my underware. It's really is quick and has a high headspeed.

I'm thinking about making mine FBL, but can't really see it would make it much more fun.

Get one, I don't think you'll regret it.

Maybe I misunderstood Tristins question. I just thought since we were in an
Align 250 forum he was asking about the Trex. That's the bird I was referring to having and those were the issues I know of that plague Trex's. Like I said I love the heli. Check my Sig. I have an MCPX too, BL with a Spin 16300 and all I gotta say about that is bring yourself an extra pair of undies this thing is fast, makes my 250 look like an Airhog heli. Parts on this thing are NOT cheap and with the headspeeds they get when you hit something before you can get to TH switch it breaks and it breaks real good.

For your living room get a mcpx and learn orientation upright AND inverted. This lil gem will also teach you collective management if you let it. There stupid tiny to work on and wear out a lil fast for me but you will flip when you see where you can fly it. Yes a indoor bl setup is a lot easier to fly and I highly recommend it because its still light and the stock tail is enough to hold it but the stock brushed motor works good too, just not for too long. You can fly out side in amazing amounts of wind but its really tiny. It gives you that airhog type of feeling but does everything an airhog cant. Tons of grins and laughs for everybody. I use to hand it around to kids. Over grass I think the only way you can kill it is leave the throttle on with the head stuck. Burns a fet. Just have a bunch of the head links laying around, they always break or get lost. oh and a metal swash. Get control of this bird and you will be getting complements from everybody when you pull the 50 out. This is your best bet if being a better pilot is what your after. Do I have one now? No. Do I regret getting one? No, I will have another one again for sure.

250 is a great bird but way to high perfomance for indoor anything shy of gym. Outside there alot of fun, when there right. There plagued with a few problems but when sorted its a blast. They carry the same servos/gyro/rx as the 450 and just bout the same price tag when stuffed. I would suggest skipping the lil heli and get the much better 450. Easier to see, work on and you can auto it at the end of the flight, somthing I never had the balls to try on the 250

The 450 flys just like your 50, just smaller and quieter. And maybe a lil floatier around zero pitch but thats electric to nitro more then anything. Ya it will react faster but if you tame it down a lil to match the 50 you wont find yourself tuning the 50 to catch the 450 witch is impossible. This would be your best bet as a fun small heli that would match with your 50 in feel and performance. If you go this route I suggest a beastx or vbar. Do I have one now? No. Do I regret getting one? No but would probly never buy one again. I crash small helis trying new stuff, my 600 gets me out of everything when the 450's have let me down. The mcpx has let my down too but who cares? Give it a quick check over and off you go again 90% of the time.

Hope this helps and let us know what you decide.

get a 250 and make it fbl. you'll love it. i have an AR7200BX (integrated receiver and FBL) and it rocks. Flys very nicely. Before the Beastx I wasn't that thrilled.

a 450 is nice too - and as said by rototiller the 250 will cost about as much as the 450 when you make it FBL. both are good.

Is my 250 fun? Yes it is, BUT! It isn't nearly as fun to fly as my large birds. Given the choice I will take my 600 size and larger birds any day of the week. I keep my 250 around mainly for winter time indoor flying. It does a good job of keeping the fingers nimble during that time. I agree with previous people who have said that flying it inside the house is not a good idea. As has already been stated, the head speed is way to high and the heli is just way to twitchy to be flown in any room smaller than a gym.

Now you stated that you have lots of flying experience, so I would say that buying a 250 or 450 would depend more on where you plan to fly it. If you're still hoping for some indoor stuff, then yes the 250 may be better IF your in a gym. If you plan to fly outside, and you want a small heli, get a 450. If you really want to do 3D in the house, get an mcpx. It's not a high end 3D heli and it has it's faults, but for practicing indoor CP type flying, it works great. It's at least more fun then a sim.

I've gone form FP to a 500...not a great idea, then a mCP X (a lot of fun and got me flying CP). Now have the 250 and think it is awesome. The mCP X allowed me to go beyond my capabilities so I am having to now take things a little easier with the 250 but think it flies fantastic. And I've only had to repair 2 feathering shafts!

All that being said, mine was second hand and I did have to reassemble it but the previous owner matched a Quark with an Inolab tail servo. I did have to setup the Quark but the tail assembly/tail servo/modified CF-tail-rod was already built and on the boom so I can't fully comment on any setup/tail issues that may exist with a new 250.
