New YGE Heat sinks for the 120/160 HV controllers

They finally arrived!

I uploaded some images, you can see how they install on the 120/160HV

They add ~5mm to the width of each side of the ESC - both are now 61mm at the widest point. They look the same but are slightly different to accommodate differences in the circuit boards.

I have a couple controllers in with the heat sinks already installed, but I have not made the individual heat sinks available as they accidentally shipped without the replacement heat shrink. That was shipped the a day ago and should arrive here early next week. Will post when they arrive.

Off topic, why is there a jumper (short) on the sensor cable?

(The heatsink does look very nice!)

It shorts the programming wire to ground to stop electrical noise from confusing the ESC during operation. It is standard on all new HV versions.

Hmmm, you call it programming wire but I guess it's the usual gov. sensor output cable.
To short an output cable is a bit confusing for me.

Is this OK to do on all YGE ESC's with sensor output cable?

Mine is quite new but didn't had anything like this.
Is it problem with all HV YGEs? What could operation without this cause?

Still wonder why it is allowed to short the sensor cable on the HV series.

"Addendum for programming ESC's without BEC (90 HV, etc)

The instructions provided with the Prog Card II to program the non-BEC equipped ESC's (90HV, etc) can be misleading on some points. These instructions should clear up the inconsistencies and may work for other non-BEC equipped YGE ESCs.

Programming is done through the shorter "programming" cable, not the throttle cable as written in the Operating Instructions. The programming cable is only about 4 inches (10 cm) long, so if the ESC is already mounted on the aircraft, you may want a servo extension at least 6 inches long to connect the programming cable to the left hand port of the Prog Card II. The right-hand port on the Prog Card II has to be hooked up to servo-level power (about 5 volts) to power the Prog Card II."

I'm unfamiliar with the HV series, hence my confusion.

Pete, are the factory mounted sinks the same as the separate ones?
The reason I ask is because I want to know if the factory one keeps the original dimensions of the esc or extends it as your post above.

Yes, the factory mounted heat shrinks are identical to the separate ones, and extend the size of the ESC. They both come from YGE.

Yes factory installed heat sinks are same as separate ones (all come from YGE). You can see from my initial pictures.

I have put them in stock now - all pre-orders have been processed.

What happens to the row of FETs that are on top of the main board? The heat sink only comes in contact with half of the FETs, the set located underneath. I'm sure the heat transfers, but just how much? Will half the FETs be hot while the other half cooler?

It looks like the xxtreme 160HV has a full wrap around heat sink, it comes in contact with all the FETs underneath the small controller board as well as the bottom.

In my discussions with YGE I did mention that and they said that it dissipates enough heat from just that side, solely because that normally is the side attached to the model and has little to no exposure to air.

There was no comment about the aftermarket sink, which I could not tell if it actually was that way or just mounted in a way that made it look like that... They would have to disassemble the ESC and extend the pins in order to put a plate between that was thick enough to handle the heat...

I will restate my questions and post a reply.

From YGE:

- the heat goes into the circuit board and the long sides of the heat sink take it over.
- If the outer package from the FETs touch the heat sink the dissipate is a little bit better.
- Mikado´s heat sink does not touch the FETs and the mounting is the same as YGE.
- 20 degrees with no air flow after two minutes and 30 to 40 degrees depending on air flow and amps.

When fitting the aftermarket sink to the normal 120hv i'm guessing its a simple case of cutting away the clear shrink wrap and encasing the esc??

Mine turned up today without the new heat shrink or mounting pads or instructions. The vendor has emailed the instructions.

Also the instructions say to Slide in and divide the completed controller in the supplied Heat-Shrink.
Shrink it with a hair drier on the hottest setting or a heat gun at approximately 200oC (392F)
at 15 cm (5.9”) distance, while doing that free up the pillars by cutting out a piece of the Heat-shrink.

Wtf makes no sense to me at the moment, probably doesn't help that I haven't got it in front of me.

Does the whole esc fitted to the sink go inside the new heat shrink ?

Also this makes no sense
The Heat sink has an electro conductive connection to the GND of the Battery connector. Therefore avoid any risk of contact with the battery’s power side. Also avoid contact with aluminum or Carbon- frame parts.

As it is now its got the heat shrink it came with and parts are touching the frame.
