3rd Annual Tuscaloosa heli fly-in, May 11-13, 2012

The West Alabama Aero Modelers (WAAM) will host its 3rd annual heli fly-in in Tuscaloosa, Alabama May 11-13, 2012, Friday-Sunday. This event was previously scheduled in the Fall, but has now been moved to May.


This is one of the best equipped flying sites in the country with paved parking, concrete pads, permanent sheds, running water, electricity, and climate controlled restrooms and clubhouse. More importantly, it features a HUGE unobstructed overfly area. See the attached aerial photo.

Although there are no RV hookups, there is plenty of room for RV's and other vehicles.


Landing fee is 20 bucks and includes lunch on Saturday.

This will be an AMA sanctioned event, but the sanction number is still in process, as of the date of this post.

We are now listed on the AMA event finder, although the date is incorrect. The event is Friday Sat and Sun, the 11,12 and 13th of May. The AMA sanction number is 0688.

Saturday, is of course, the big day and as far as I know, pilot registration will be on Saturday, but Friday is open to all and is part of the event.

To fly, or enter the pit area you must have a valid AMA membership card.
and there is also a 20 dollar fee to fly.

Show up to watch is free.

There is a small sub-field with a shed and a table for anyone who is a beginner and is just hovering, especially the smaller models

Just a few days away..

To those of you who might plan to show up early, PARA locks the gate at night.. 9pm I think, but we have the gate combination. If anyone is arriving by camper/RV/etc late Thursday night or Friday morning before 7am, either PM me or call the phone number I will leave on the gate so I can give you the combination

Well, I'd like to thank all of you who took the chance on the weather and came to our event.
Although it was a bit windy on Saturday, we did not see any rain until after 4 PM, so those that did come got a chance to fly a good bit as well as socialize. Lots of flying slots, no waiting.

Maybe we'll have better luck with the weather next year
