Default Stock YGE with HV Servos?

I have only crashed my Protos twice. Both times the blades stopped mid-air and when on the ground, I found the belt off the gear.

The first time I just assumed the belt was loose and popped off the gear causing the heli to come down. But the second time there was no way the belt was loose. I read on another thread that HV servos may cause a problem with YGE 60A that has 5.5v BEC.

I am running a non-stretched Protos with 13T pinion on MSH/Scorpion 880kv and YGE 60A. Using Hyperion 6S EX 2600 45C. Flat throttle at 89% and the motor always comes down hot. All servos are High Voltage: JR 3717 HV cyclic and MKS HBL980 tail.

Pardon me if my lack of knowledge about power systems is apparent. Is mismatched voltage the cause of my problem and is a separate BEC the solution?

I'm running some Hyperion HV servos on my Jive's 6V output without issue. I ran them at 5.6V for a while without issue. I know the JR HV servos can cause problems when running at HV voltage but I'm not sure they would cause problems running them at 5.5V.

I suppose if nothing else, you can try one of these BECs:

They're not too expensive and should be more than adequate. Also, a guy on the ark heli forum did some load testing on the larger gryphon BEC and found them to be very robust. I may try this BEC at some point.

I think the whole thing is backwards. HV servos are meant not to require BEC. Isn't that correct?

What could it be?
The belt again? Do you guys usually find the belt off the gear after a crash?
The motor itself? The 13T pinion? How would I go about this mid-air shut down problem? Can't even tell if it's mechanical or the electronics.

Yes, you are correct. If you want to use a 2S lipo, you can if all your electronics can handle it. Just remember to disconnect the YGE's red wire from the throttle wire connector before plugging it into the rx.

But for those that don't want to have to charge an additional lipo, you can use an HV BEC powered by the main lipo. You still would have to disconnect the red wire from the YGE's throttle connector.

If your motor shuts down in flight most likely it's because your ESC cuts off. Either low voltage or over-current. Most likely your HV cyclic servos + BLS tail pull too much current at 5.5V and the YGE built-in BEC shuts down. After all, the YGE BEC is only rated for 3A continuous (5A peak). IMO you need a BEC capable of a minimum 5A continuous (8A+ peak) to run those servos. In particular, one brushless servo alone can have 5A+ peak current when stalled or starting/stopping.

I've never experienced the YGE shutting down. If your belt is tensioned correctly, then it won't come off without it snapping.

Do you have LVC turn on in the ESC? If so, it could be hitting LVC and shutting down. Check the YGE ESC manual.

Ordered a Gryphon 45V 15A Hyper BEC

I asked about the need for voltage regulators when I got the HV servos from my LHS. I respect people who can say 'I don't know' but the idiot said 'no need' instead. I just have myself to kick. Luckily nothing serious happened.

Thank you alex and Dr. M for the helpful responses.
