Default Replacing pinion on 450 3D

Hello!
I'm hoping you can tell me how to go about replacing the pinion on my 450 3D. It came off in flight. Have a new one.
Do I take the motor out with the 4 screws?
Many thanks!

Yeah, you will have to take the motor out of the heli and also take the motor mount off of the motor.

Usually a good idea to disconnect all 3 motor wires to keep from bending them while you work on the motor.

Yep, pretty straight forward procedure. Remove all 4 motor mount bolts. You might not need to remove the motor mount if the pinion meshes with the main gear and that grub screw is accessable.

Use some blue loctite on the grub screw before installing it. As long as the motor shaft has a flat spot you shouldnt need any other adhesives to install pinion.

You probably already know this, but if the motor spins the wrong way when you get it all assembled, just swap any 2 motor wires.

No need to remove the mount, just the motor. 2 screws from the bottom, removing the ESC makes access easy with a good set of hex drivers.

Ack!
It appears that the shaft on the motor that the pinion attaches to is what broke. Buy new motor?

personally i wouldn't spend any more money on the 420 or the 440 from eflite, they wear out fast and you cant get replacement shafts.

If you are going to get a new motor i would get a scorpion, or the re-branded scorpion "NextD" motors. Much higher quality and they have replacement parts available.
The scorpions go for $70-$80 and the nextD motors are about $55

I was reading somewhere that you could also use the BL450MX motor from align, its only 50 bucks. Some of the guys here may know more on it.

Shanes,

I would not pass go or collect $200.00 before you Call Horizon Hobby and customer service and share with them this story, they are usually very good about product support.

Best Regards
Doug

I completely agree! Approach it the right way and you will more than likely receive a new motor for free.

If not, let me know as I have a new 420 I'll sell.
