Why did this thread die just as it was getting somewhere?

Probably because there are now plenty systems with self level available that dont need as much wiring.

Also because the Flymentor was a horrible system.

I must confess that for a $70 system, the flymentor is ok for a 450 heli for a non 3d pilot as it is very affortable.

The other systems are more than $400, so for now i will stick to flymentor for my 450 heli.

If however i had a 600 or 700 heli, i would be nowhere near flymentor.
Its like having an Aston Martin and using cheap Chinese tires.

So i quess it all depends which size of heli each one of us uses

Thanks for the explanation.

I cannot agree that Flymentor was horrible. It's been fine for lots of people, including me.

But it's an old piece of equipment and I can see that the industry has newer components to use, and newer software algorithms to exploit.

As it's a hobby, a pastime, it doesn't seem right to spend hundreds on a relatively minor part of the equipment. I already spend far too much!

That would be true if the controls weren't so bad that it caused the heli to crash. That gets expensive fast. That's what happened to me when I used it.

I think it is great and had one linked into a FBL controller. However, its worth noting that if the nose is pointing straight down when you centre the sticks the self leveling can go either way ( normal or inverted ). Hence, defo not for 3D. But for learning and a basic comfort blacket then its very good, just dont allow yourself to get too attached or it takes away a lot of your skill.

I have been using Flymentor for 4-5 years my original one is still operating fine.
I now have about 7 of them and well as several Helicommands and Naza's.
I would not buy any more but also would not part with the ones I have, most of them are in scale heli's and work very well
It's cheap and does what it is supposed to do stabilise the heli provided the heli is in good mechanical condition and both the heli and Flymentor are set up correctly.
The forum shows that most of the problems with it are down to the user.
But of course there are better systems out there.

I dunno, maybe mine was defective. I don't think it's just that I'm too stupid to figure it out, because after giving up on it, I joined a group who have developed our own flight controller from scratch which is far superior so... <shrug>

I can't remember, does the unit have accelerometers built in, or *just* a 3 axis gyro?

Default T-Rex 450 Flybarless using Flymentor in position mode.

I have found it quite easy to set up flymentor in position mode and it works.
It works better than V-Bar...more stable.

Yes, the Flymentor flies well. It's normal for those on forums to be the ones with problems. And it's clear who they are because they tell you something is hopeless, and then ask the basic questions that show they haven't studied the device at all.

Or they must have bought a duff one. Why must they? It might just be you...

Anyway for me the Flymentor was very good. It flew for five minutes at a time hands-off, and that should be enough for anyone unless you never want to fly circuits. Mine has flown so much (and with a big 3S5000 battery) that my HK450 has worn out. It needs a strip down and refurbishment.

But nothing needs to be changed on the Flymentor, it must be almost four years since I plugged it into a computer for a tune up.

Good stuff, and reliable too. It makes my 450 more stable than my Raptor 550e, and if it were not for the flybarless systems that I now use, I'd be taking it out more often.

I can't criticise the Flymentor either, used it for years on a flybarred 450.I fly fbl exclusively now.simple set-up.I've yet to convert my turbine to fbl.
