Default Short Boom - Long Boom, 425 Boom; what's up?

Ok, the Long Boom uses the 575XL belt and the longer control rod, correct? You can spin up to what, 550 blades safely on this setup?

What about the Short Boom with the 522 belt, how big a blades can you spin there? I thought you could run up to 500's but...

http://www.readyheli.com/204192_Shor...i_p/204192.htm

So looks like you just need the control rod with this kit:

http://www.readyheli.com/204579_Shor...5_p/204579.htm

Then there's the 425 kit, is this essentially the parts that made up the Gaui 425 helo then? So you could have a Super-Shorty Gaui 550 with this setup; smaller then I'd want but...

http://www.readyheli.com/204664_425L...0_p/204664.htm

Just trying to be clear here and stay unconfuzed... Happy Flying!

Thats how I see it. I'd like to try some 425's with high head speeds on this heli. Its certainly narrow enough. LOL.

Except many people, like me, are running the short boom, with 500 mm blades. Without problems of course. And some are running 515s.

Yep, same here. 204192 with 500mm blades. Didn't realize this boom is for 475's until I pulled the spare one I have and compared its length to the one on the heli.

The 500mm blades (haven't tried 515s) but seems much more proportion with the shorter boom. The 550mm blades would look nice on the longer boom, IMHO.

Maybe I'm a moron, but I'm fighting to understand the benefit of a shorter tail. I haven't dug in the forums about it too much, but in my search for parts found it crazy confusing too and ended up measuring mine to be sure. (it's the long one, and I'm running 500's)

I'm assuming it's an agility/performance thing, but we all know what happens when you assume ;P Can you guys enlighten me?

Tnx

Jay,

For me it's just a looks and balance (CoG) thing really - I always thaought thatthe 550 looked a bit long and thin with the long boom so put the short boom on and the CoG is spot on

Cheers,
Mike.

There might also be a "mechanical" issue...

With a long boom, the tail rotor is further from the axle of the main rotor. Therefore, less strength is needed to make the heli turn anti clockwise, or just to maintain the heading.

... the longer the lever, the easier to raise the Earth...

Thanks for the info guys. I definitely see the difference in 'looks' but am mostly curious about the performance changes. So as I understand it now, it'd speed up pirouettes, and make a little less work for the gyro/tail servo. Might be worth looking into, hrmm...[EDIT] Ok, just re-read kk's post, had that backwards... longer boom, easier on gyro/servo, shorter boom quicker piros etc.[/EDIT]

Also the tail rotor and main rotor interact within one another. You want the tail rotor within a certain distance in relation to the main rotor. AFAIK that's why the tail rotor turns up into the main rotor.

Now this is likely a whole other can 'o beans, but what sorta interactions are you referring to? I can't imagine fighting to get the belt / tail-drive timing so you're rotating through 'clear spots' in the main disc, and I was under the impression the only interaction between the two was the rotation speed?

See what happens when I can't fly OR build... now I'm left surfing the forums and over-thinking everything!

I'm trying to find info on tail rotor distance in relation to the main rotor and I'm finding nothing in both the rc and real heli worlds. Only mention of ideally the tail rotor axis being on the same plane as the main rotors.
