Please use this thread to capture pictures of injuries to humans inflicted by RC helicopters. This hobby can be as safe as any other when treated with the proper respect. This thread is intended to help new and old hobbyist understand why this respect is required.
Please include a picture and any details you have on how and why the injury occurred. Thanks Rick

Heres my fingers after a hot start up on a Zoom 400 (carbon blades). I had the tx set on the wrong model and it decided to let me know that this wasnt a good idea. Four stitches, tendon damage, no sensation in finger tip to this day

I bought an Art-Tech RTF Falcon 3D and (unknown to me) the TX had been factory set with the throttle reversed. The ESC beeped upon power up, and I thought it just needed to be initialized by going to full throttle and back (I have an Electrifly 45A ESC on my plane that needs this to be done to arm the system), so I thought nothing of going to (what I thought was) full throttle and back - with the stick all the way down, copter went to full throttle, with a blade tip speed of 150 mph at its head speed of 2050 rpm, I was hit at full speed and this is the result 5 minutes after the injury - I have a massive bruise 12 inches long and two very deep cuts into muscle.

Heli injury
I was really not wanting to admit this, but here it goes. Was working on the Heli, thought I had already binded the Dx7, well, I guess not. And I didn't have the Throttle Hold on for some reason. Anyway, my radio started beeping, "low battery" signal, I looked over, saw the display, and reached over and flicked off the radio. Not a good thing to do. I soon discovered turning off the radio unleashed the "BEAST". I don't have pictures of my finger, because I could not hold the camera, bandage at the same time. The finger was much worse.

That's what I finally figured out. I do think I had done the bind procedure, but I made changes and it says somewhere in there to re-bind it. Don't think I did that.
I hope someone else can learn from my mistake besides me. Everybody be careful

THE 2.4 gHZ DX7 DOES NOT HAVE CRYSTALS.
no other transmitter has the same code, that is why you can fly anytime anywhere(as far as the radio signal goes) to make it work the receiver is BOUND to the transmitter. what that means is the receiver learns the unique code of your transmitter. It also sets the safe mode for the model. This is the important part as it sets how the model behaves when it looses signal from the transmitter. for example it turns off the motor, probably the best option. It will land or crash depending on which way it is pointing. not a good option is to switch to stuntmode 1 and full throttle that will hurt) |

i dont have a picture but i was holding my Blade cpp one day adjusting and forgot to unplug the motor lead and I hit the idle up switch and my finger was touching the main gear. it sliced it like a knife. i almost droped the heli.. I won't ever do that again. thank goodness the batt was dead so it didnt'' go very fast.

Multiple Lacerations - no picture
When a flying buddy's Honey Bee King V2 drastically lost altitude after he flipped it I thought it was going to pile in. But he saved it, though somehow it headed straight for me. At the last instant I still didn't know whether to step left or right so I blocked it with my right arm. Ouch! It cut me in three places, raised one hell of a swelling, and had me wondering whether it had possibly cracked a bone.
All is considerably better three days later, but windy days are not great for practicing maneuvers that a pilot does not have control over. This heli in this collision was wearing wood blades, by the way. I would really hate to go through the same experience with fiber or CF blades....

The times that I have gotten a bit too close are usally associated with flips or nose in that went a bit awry.

Apparently, everyone in this thread has been flying little BladeCPs and gotten a couple scratches. Where are the real injuries you say?
Here's one from another electric heli. I was told the cut was to the bone and required 8 stitches inside and 14 stitches outside. |
