Yep, going to give it the old school try..

Stainless steel torque tube is already fabbed up along with a carbon fiber boom.

Waiting for the new head to be delivered and test it out before ordering up the blades.

Hopefully by the New Year will test spooling it up.

Payload is considerably lighter than most AP rigs, a pair of small cameras, one for video the other for stills.
Target AUW should be under 16 lbs.

The next question would be ..Why build a 900 for such a light payload.
Answer...
Why not? Need a winter project, besides how many home grown 900E's are around?

Hey nightflyr,

I never learned what the sizing criteria are for helis... How do you know what size of blades/boom constitutes a 900 size heli?

Boom is easy...

As long as you clear your main blades from your tail blades your good to go.

As to blades.. that is a gray area..

700 class can run 680, 690, 700, 710, 713, 720

As to 800 classI think there is a 790 blade set, 800's, 810's, 820's and I believe 830's

900 class would start @ 880's and up

The "class" specifications are pretty broad and don't forget tail blade size is a factor. The "700 class" Logo is getting pretty close with 710's and 105 on the tail. The "800 class" Trex is pretty damn close with 813s and 115s. I wouldn't go bigger on either.

But AUW of 16 pounds on 900? At least you shouldn't have a problem autoing.

What brand Blades did you intend on trying Nightflyr?

We've run up to 850's on our Tazer, will be interested in your thoughts on the flight characteristics with the big blades and light weight.

Hi Chris,
Going to give these a spin..

SAB 880mm Right Hand Rotation

SKU: SAB-0232-88R

BTW this is in no way any comparison to your Tazer, Hopefully I will be ordering one of those from you very soon.
Just a winter tinkering project to keep my mind busy, and I don't think it's been done before quite like this.

Not at all. As I said I'm curious to see if your experience is similar to ours.

Starting the construct of the 900E

And found a simple and readily available source for booms that would be required.

Even though I have a set of custom carbon fiber booms that will work on this 900 build.

For the average person stock booms are not so readily available and to have custom length booms made is very expensive.

So the simple alternative...

The the supplier for this little gem...no other than....

The only minor issue found ..the TTrubber bearing holders are slightly loose when inserted, ut this was easily remedied by wrapping a length of silicone bead material around the rubber holder to take up the play.

It's a simple and inexpensive solution to a expensive hard to find item.

Seems like you'll be in search for another winter project soon.
Nice work, awaiting results. BTW, is that MOD1 gearing or 0.7?
