FBL Conversion with 3GX
I managed to buy a cheap used 3GX FBL unit the other day. I also ordered the FBL conversion kit from Blade yesterday. I use a 3GX because I also have that in my Align 450L Dominator where it works well for me.
Did somebody here try that combination before? Anything I should pay attention to?

Hmmm, no answers for nearly 24h. So maybe I should be more precise.
I'm wondering about the following things: * Will the stock ESC of a 450-3D be able to also supply a 3GX or will that combination most certainly create brown outs? * Will the stock servos be sufficient with a 3GX? I assume they should be because the same servos are used in a 450X. Am I right? Did somebody here try that? Tried to search the forum but did not find any answers.

Should do. I have stock with Ikon. Works fine except no auto-bail. I assume because the stock esc is set for soft start and I don't know how to chance that. May get a new esc just to work around that. What are the reccomended head speeds on the 450?

As far as I know that's a matter of your personal liking. Some prefer high speeds, some prefer a lower head speed. I used a flat throttle curve of 75% when I last flew my 450-3D with the flybar on. That was with the stock motor an pinion. Maybe I start with that value when the FBL setup is done. I'll report here about that.

I ran into my first problem. As a first step in the setup you have to check and maybe adjust the servo directions. That worked after I found out that I did mix up the connectors for the pitch servo and the gyro gain on on the receiver. I corrected that.
Now the swash moves down when I push the throttle/pitch-stick and the swash moves up when I pull that stick. I remember that this is the way the swash on a 450-3D is supposed to move. But how should the swash move when roll or pitch is applied with the cyclic stick? I know I should have looked that up on my 450-3D before I changed anything but I didn't.

left cyclic, swash will tilt left. right cyclic, swash should tilt right.
forward cyclic, swash tilts foreword, back cyclic, swash tilts back.

Isn't it strange that swash movements are the same for leading and trailing edge controlled blades with the exception of collective pitch? Thank you again for confirming that.

Status:
Installed V5.0 on the 3GX (it had 3.0 on it). Ran through the complete mechanical setup and also did the setup for the 3GX and my DX6i transmitter. On the bench it all looks really good. All swash movements and corrections are correct. Ready for a test flight this weekend!

Could not wait for a real test flight on Saturday. Made a first cautious test hover in my garden this evening. Everything seems to be fine. Very stable hover .
I noticed a slight backwards turn after rudder input. Needs some adjustment in the 3GX I assume.

Went over the rudder setup again.
First real test flight was a full success. The tail wag was completely gone. Don't really know why. Flew circles and eights and some quite fast high turns. Very stable. In comparison with my 450L (6S) the converted 450-3D feels a bit weak but that was what I expected. 6S vs 3S means no chance for 3S. Now I've got an additional 450 to practice and always one 450 which is ready to fly. At least if I don't crash them both on the same day.

Flew again today with a throttle curve setting of 80% flat. That was better. I think I'll try a v-shape next time with 90% at the low and high end of the curve. Maybe that's even better.

Yesterday I found out that I had DR set to 75% in all modes. I guess I even did the setup with that setting on. So I have to go over that again. Rudder still feels too soft. Further increase of the gyro value produces a tail wag. Have to mess with the rudder delay setting or maybe get a new and faster tail servo.
