How to crash a 550x
Not really a safety concern, or is it? You be the judge.

That's almost as bad as the captain of the Exxon Valdez not seeing Alaska floating right in front of him...

Did you lose control or were you in control the whole time? Letting the heli fly behind you is considered bad protocol and is generally unsafe. You don't know whether there are people behind you.

Sorry should have specified here, I was not the pilot of the machine. it was a fellow from around our area. ( it's in the YT description ) I merely posted it on the web for him. not sure why, lol. but anyways he had total control, hes just gets too eager to fly big and fast. But I agree very bad protocol and very dangerous. what if the camera guy was under that tree? I tried to help him learn slow, but when Others like myself are not around, he, like many others, goes nuts. I get really worried when new guys like this come around they don't listen well and could end up cost themselves or someone else there life. we have enough flak right now and don't need anymore. we all need to do our part to help the fresh ones understand that while it is fun and exciting to do 3D and generally fly heli's, they are very dangerous.

I don't know why everything always has to turn into a discussion about safety and how imposing regulations are going to ruin the hobby. The dude made a mistake and hit a tree. Stuff happens. I've seen a lot more concerning behavior even at sanctioned AMA fields and I'm pretty sure his wallet is going to take care of teaching the lessons in this case.

no need to argue this as safety issue (not based on video). If someone looses orientation and is not used flying towards him/herself it can happen. We all had to get through a learning curve.
If however he was in full control than I would question why there is no flight line. But thats hard to judge from the video. |

Even if this guy in the OP's vid legitimately lost control and wasn't intentionally flying behind "the flight line", it's no reason people can't bring it up for discussion. Let's use it as an example of why it's important when flying around other people to define a firm "do not cross" line, both for the heli AND for spectators, and discuss why most people generally fly left to right/right to left, and not towards/away form one's self.

Every single time I've crashed a heli it went somewhere I hadn't intended it to go. A flight line isn't going to prevent that. If he lost control, and I can't image anyone flying behind themselves and crashing into a tree intentional, it was an accident. All we can do is fly as safe as we can, keep them in front of us and always remember these heli's can be very dangerous.

Hahahaha.
"God dammmnnnn" This made my day. Heli's crash all the time. Nothing sinister here - I think the op just had a brainfade moment. We've all done it at some point. |

Pretty much my point. What concerns me is that the OP mentioned that the pilot does fly behind himself a bit more often. That actually would be plain foolish since no one knows who or what is behind him/herself at the moment. Believe me -> once heli's crash in front of you its an interesting feeling Once its done due to lost control - OK. Once its done because of feeling like its cool -> sorry -> not funny at all.
