Default Edge 130 issues

Soldered the plugs.
Installed the ESC.
Connected the motor
etc, etc,etc......

Set throttle end points.
Powered the heli and the motor stuttered. Did not run normal.
Esc got hot, wires to the motor too.
After several tries motor runs for a Little bit. Lower the throttle to try to start motor, stuttering again.

Tried the motor on another Edge 130 and it worked fine. So it is not the motor.
Tried another motor on the problematic esc and had the same stuttering problem.

Redid the soldering of the connectors from the esc to the motor to rule out any cold soldering and the problem is still there.

Restored default settings and still the same.

Any ideas?
Anything else I should try?

Sounds like one phase of the motor is not getting power. Could be several things.
  1. Bad motor connector. Replace motor connectors and wiring.
  2. Bad motor phase. Could be a broken motor wire or short in the windings. Try a different motor.
  3. Bad ESC. If not 1 or 2 call Tech Support for instructions.
From your comments it's probably and ESC problem. Call Tech Support and request a replacement to be cross-shipped.

Also make sure PWM is 8, Motor Timing LOW, and Start Power High.

What firmware on these ESC's? I had major issues like that with two edge 130's on 4.2.

If I remember correctly both escīs are on 4.20 firmware.
I am going to try another firmware to see if there is hope with this esc before I send it to a better life, or to Castle......

Go back to 4.19 and try 55-65 start power, varies depending on motor.

One of our fliers here had the same issue. The motor spins for a few rounds before getting overcurrent error. Esc feels hot while motor was not. He changed to a edge 120hv and the problem went away for good.

I have been keeping an eye on this and is seems the Edge 130 isn't entirely happy with 4.2 but the 120HV is fine. Looking forward to hearing about op's experiment back to 4.19.

I am also looking forward to the results. I run an edge 130, and it's great. I had slight stuttering problems to start with. I switched to airplane mode, and there was no hesitation. Went back to heli and all was good I am not sure what firmware.

I was bench testing the ESC. It was not on any heli at the moment.
Installed 4.19 firmware hoping that it could work but it did not.
It was an eye openner to see the ESC smoke in front of you.
Disconnected the battery in a nanosecond.
Glad it happened there and not in the air.
Sending the unit back to Castle for repair or Exchange.

There is something going on with the 130's. i am the one that sold him that esc and it was a new replacement from castle after the original esc did the same shutter and start failure. i never got a consistent start from it but when castle got it back they told me it tested good so when the replacement did the same thing i was told it had to be some incompatibility with my motor. what are the odds that two out the box esc's have the same issue yet still test good? i wouldn't bother with the tech line as all they did was to refer me to clint. he's not always the fastest to reply but he works late hours and will reply late and was very helpful.

The 130 is a new design and maybe it has a bug. I have never seen a 130. I have 100, 120, and 160 and have never had that problem. Maybe a 100 or 120 would be a better choice for you guys. Are you guys really pulling 130 amps continuous, the 100 will take peaks to over 150 with no problems?

Has anyone posted a data log of the stuttering problem? It would be interesting to see the peak current.

I don't have the log anymore but my first one was actually showing next to nothing. Was only hitting 20-30 amps.
