Default Main shaft play on my Whiplash Gasser

I have some up & down play in my main shaft on my Whiplash gasser. I don't remember when building it using any shims. Should i be concerned with this play. I pulled it apart & can't really find any cause of the play. I've had it since they were released & never been crashed.

the lowest bearing block on the whiplash can be adjusted up and down for removing any play, by design. Check that.. that bearing block is usually tightened after install of the main gear jesus bolt, and pulling the screws / block up, and tightening..

hope that made sense.. There should be NO play

if there is still play, check the lower jesus bolt on the main shaft.

check the top and bottom of the main drive hub

the newer versions had a steel sleeve in them. The older versions did not

on the older versions the ends would deform into the bearings which created vertical slop

as noted, adjusting the lower block is how to address it but if its deforming you'll probably see the slop come back over time.

Default If it's the old design hub

You can add the steel washer between the hub and the bearing to prevent wear in the future. Glue the washer with goop to the hub using a spare mainshaft as a guide. Once dry then you can easily install it in the model.

Now that i think about it more. The slop came from when i changed out the one way bearing to the GMN bearing awhile back. I had to almost split the frames to get the clutch bell out & probably loosened up the lower bearing block.. I never had any play before i changed out the 1 way..

do order the correct lubricating oil from Miniature for that GMN bearing.. as after around 50 flights.. this one will give up too.. there is just not enough lubrication in the bell for the OWB causes excessive wear and failure.. Mine failed and so did other few members.

Default I'm batting over 100 with mine

But I got a new bearing and that special oil on the way also. I'm using this one until it lets go and then will replace with the new one and use that new oil with it.

Mine failed at 60. Raja went to 103 on his first and is getting close to 100 on his second I think???

I just got and installed the new one from Josef with the special oil. the oil is supposedly similar to ATF but its definitely a heavier viscosity than the thin redline ATF I was using before... Not quite 10w30 thick but similar to air tool oil id guess.

One other difference is that the bearing from Josef feels a lot tighter than the 422m I got from Rhodes. I dont know yet if there is a reason for that. I hope to fly it today.

As far as failure... I inspected mine after it failed, it wasn't sprag wear, a few of the tiny tension springs that hold them in broke away. Now maybe the oil will mean a softer engagement and put less stress on those springs?? I dont know... I'm just not convinced yet a different oil will solve it.

The 2nd one is at 87 now and I got another on the way from Josef. Will keep this one in there until "EOL" or end of life and then put in the new one.
