Default My New Torque Tube Conversion for the G5

Folks,

I'll attempt to do a small summary of my latest improved TT for the Outrage G5.

Unfortunately only 2 simple parts needs to be custom made..

Flies really nicely...

The conversion involves using the following:

* - The Tarot new extended 480 boom and TT - http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=7076

* The Align 450 V3 TT gearset - http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=4460

* Bearings - 2 x MR106ZZ

* tail - std align 450 pro TT tail or a cheaper Tarot one - http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=5056

* TT support bearing for inside the boom - http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=4402

* use your existing tail servo mounts and pushrod..

* The 2 custom parts are a small coller with threaded m2 hole to go between the 2 bearings on the front TT gear and a Aluminium Adapter to go on the front of the boom. (more on this later)

NOTE: Cheaper tarot V3 gears and replacements are also available if you search on "v3" - http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/a...s=v3&x=39&y=11

--------------------------------------------

Installing:
========

1) Basically the front belt pully and gear is replaced with the V3 beveled TT front drive gear.

NOTE: this has a screw on the top - you can take off and then use some way of sliding the plastic gear up a mm then use the screw to slowly lower it again to get correct gear meshing height. I used simple 450 ball-link plyers to lift it a litte - was actually quite simple to do, just care is to be taken to not slip and damage the gear.

2) the end section is relatively straight forward - stick the 450 pro tail on the end of the TT

3) put the TT support bearing in approx 40% of the way (not in the exact middle) - just as long as it off-center to reduce vibes.

4) the front TT gear slips into my Adapter and then the adapter into the front of the TT. a simple m2 screw (I used a spare ball link) then holds the gear in place...

5) A VERY little bit of bearing retainer glue is applied to both the outer race of bearings of the front gear to help keep the assembly from moving in the adapter (the screw is added security) - A VERY little bit of retainer is added to the narrow outer part of the adapter to keep it secure in the boom.

6) the whole assembly is then sliped into the boom mounts and simply moved forward/back to adjust meshing... the V3 gear may also need adjusting up/down as previously mentioned..

7) Mount servo, links, etc - use the Std G5 tail blades - their the largest I've found so give quite fair holding power as long as your HS is moderate or above.

---------------------------------

Adapter:

* The main adapter is a section of 12mm ALU tube with a 10mm internal diameter.
15mm of it is normal and then another 15mm is reduced on a lathe to 11mm outer diameter to fit inside the boom. It's actually still quite firm/strong even reduced. A M2 hole is drilled at the right spot to match the hole in the bearing spacer so that the front bearing of the TT gear is flush with the adapter front.

* The inner spacer has an 10mm outer diameter and internally 8mm - the 2mm hole is tapped for the locking screw to thread into.

----------------------------------

Some pics that say 1000 words...

PS: I could make the adapters for those that don't have anyone to turn them on a lathe for them but due to the time they take, postage ,etc they may be expensive for what they are - would be about $20 + post so please see if you can get a mate to make you one for cheaper.. I don't mind making them if you're willing to pay thou - (hobby funds for me) lol

great work but the G5 tail case and dual arm bell crank and slider is SO MUCH better and slop free than the cup in a ball, incorrect geometry align tail. I greatly respect your hard work but on 450's I will stick with a belt. I wont consider a tt until I get past the 550 size and only then because of weight, not performance issues. Belts around the main shaft on bigger birds are way superior to the take off shaft design. Super work anyway's

Thanks for the comments Scott_S, I understand completely.

Yes I agree the G5 tail is nice - but my reason for doing this was that I got the G10 frame version of the heli and would get static brown-outs continuously from the belt system.

It would brown-out in my hand just moderately spooling up (no blades) - if I kept my finger rubbing gently on the front pully, no brown-outs.. so was definitely static.. and I checked everything many many times for rubbing and sources of friction - could find none..

Since replacing with a TT - no brownouts at all.. no glitches, nothing.. and I can't do smack 3D only basic so the Align tail works well for me.. and for a lot of smack 3D pilots as well..

As an addition - TT reduces load caused by belt so you typically get 10-15% ish more power at the head.. so there are good and bad for both.. at the end it's a personal choice I guess.. I'd never go back to belt now if I had a chance of TT (at reasonable cost) on any of my helis..
