Took a dive
Had to happen sooner or later... I was working on slow circuits in the wind today and clipped a tree, then a nice gust of wind took it over the fence and into neighbor's pool. A little wind is not normally a problem as I usually fly high enough to avoid the obsticles in my yard and give me time to recover from a mistake. Only this time I was a little too far toward my back wall and it clipped a palm frond that was bouncing around and I was trying to recover from that when the next gust hit it. Since it was on the way down, still spinning and heading for the neighbor's wall, I thought it was gonna hit the wall before I could bring it under control. So I panicked and hit TH... Just my luck it cleared the wall by a few inches and I heard a nice splash as it hit the pool. Had to swallow some pride and sum up the courage to go over there and ask to retrieve it. Luckily their babysitter was there and helped me get it back. I immediately unplugged the battery and put it in a safe spot to watch it. The heli's drying out now... I can't see any real damage to it except its wet. It was underwater for about 15 minutes. It's been an hour since I put the battery under observation... I can't see any puffing on the battery at all... could it be OK too?

let it fully dry out before you boot her up. Keep your hopes up though, i've heard of most MCPX's working fine after a dip in some water. Might be safer to just toss the battery.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the heli's OK, just curious about the battery, specially cause its a brand new one. (RATS ) I THINK that neighbor's pool is a saltwater one.
The other neighbor just put up an above ground metal frame pool last week, so now I have double the pool danger to fly with...

If it is a saltwater pool, the battery is toast already. The proper way to dispose and deactivate a LiPo battery involves submerging it in salt water.

That's true but only after you open it up so the water can get inside.

I put mine in my pool last year and after drying it out and oiling the motors it's been fine since. A salt water pool may make a big difference though I don't think it hurt the battery as much as I would worry about everything rusting

My MCPX went in the pond, I unplugged the battery as soon as I could and dried the board off with towels and then sat it face down in a pile of dry rice, and the rice draws the moisture out. I successfully rescued an iphone4 that had been submerged for three days doing this!!
Its fine now, both the heli and the phone. |
