So for anyone still interested...
I epoxied the rod in some CF tube and it's still way too flimsy, so I'll wait on my CF rod and rod ends to arrive before trying to fly her. Also, it looks like my phase sensor has decided to give up the ghost so I also have another one on the way but living where I do, things do take some time to arrive so I'm going to look at what I can do with the wiring whilst I wait. To be honest, I could probably put her in the air this weekend but the wiring would be messy, the governor would be the built in one and I wouldn't be comfortable with the tail rod. I have a funny feeling that this heli will become my go to/flagship/favourite heli so I'm more than happy to bide my time and get it set up as I want before putting her in the air.

Decided to just fly with the HW gov as my sensor still isn't here, finished the wiring and setup, adjusted the belt tension and as I was adjusting th tail endpoints.... the tail servo died on the bench
I've shelved it until my Koby arrives and the tail servo gets replaced. Longest. Build. Ever.

Sorry to hear that your tail servo died, but if it has to die, better that if do it on the bench.
I have had one tail servo die on the bench, and one aileron servo die on the bench. The tail servo was brand new (as was the helicopter that I installed it on). I was glad they failed, when they failed, rather than in the air.

Well I just found an old S9254/S9257 (not sure which, the label has fallen off and I forget) in my parts box, I might give that a crack on the tail just to see how it goes.
Not sure how long it'll last on 7.4V though

Futaba 9254 is a 4.8 volt tail servo (I think the 9257 is too).
As I recall the 9257 is a mini servo and, IMHO, suitable for a 450-not a 500.

I was getting excited there for a bit, might just use it in my plank then and wait for my replacement tail servo.
Really want to fly her but it's taking forever to get her in the air.

I understand, having been through this before with factory bad servos (not JR, by the way)-very frustrating.
On the other hand, I would make sure that it is as close to perfect as possible (in this case, have the correct tail servo) in order to assure success and reliability.

Yeah, it's just another few weeks now, servo back to the US, fixed, then back to me.
~10-14 days each way is a bummer.

A 9257 or any quality, high-speed, mini (tail) servo will still work great on the Atom. Granted, they usually don't have the torque of a full size servo, but the Atom flies great on a 3500G/9257 or Airtronics mini (watch any of Jeff Pfeifer's Atom flights because that's what he flew on his, even stretched). I've flown a few with these configurations as well as an 8900G, BLS251, Torq 9188, and MP80G. The biggest limiting factor is usually the tail blades IMHO and how well you set up the tail geometry as well as how smooth you can get the slider assembly.

Respectfully, old friend.
The only Atom's I have ever encountered that experienced tail wag had mini servos on them. If you remember that Atom we tried to help the young lady with, years ago, at the LA3D. It had a wag that neither you nor I could resolve (granted it had some other setup issues as well due to the fellow who set it up for her). I am now the fourth owner of that same machine, which is wag free with a standard sized tail servo. I would agree that you can use a mini servo, and it can be made to work, but it is not optimal and I would not recommend it, as mini servos tend to loose their speed on larger machines, due to lack of torque. Good discussion. As always, I do very much respect your opinion. The only thing I really disagree with you on is your decision to move to the other side of the country!

Did she have a 9650 on the tail or something? I remember a bit of the issues she had, but nothing of the setup other than it was at least decent for that time period. I know if the servo is too slow they definitely won't be enough for the Atom, but torque can be an issue with some minis as well and I agree that a full-size is the way to go if you have the choice.
No argument on your second point. Guilty as charged

She had a 9257 (which Thomas, then President of Compass, had given her).
By the way (sorry for the digression). Through a mutual friend, I have heard that Thomas passed away (I think you knew him). I was very sorry to hear this. I know that he had been ill for quite some time. He had been very kind to me, and I am sorry to hear that he is no longer with us.

Yes, sad to hear about Tom. Perhaps that was a bit of why he was a bit irritable in his latter years? I always found him to be quite pleasant so it sucks to hear he's gone. As the world turns I suppose? anywho...sorry for the sidetrack as well.
