Yes Jerry, I hope your having a great time. Catch you when the boat docks.

As for the progress on the quad front, I have disappointingly allowed my indecision to grind me to a halt.

As you know I'd made my mind up on the Phantom, but then I couldn't get it out of my head that it was such a waste of money to get all that kit from them that was uneeded.

Tx, charger, lipo, etc. I'd also made a mistake and thought I could get the Phantom 2 for £350, but this has custom batteries, and must have their charger, which takes ages to charge, but it does have the benefit of being FPV and that gimble thing ready, for future, and it also isn't £350.

The new batteries do give an amazing 20 -25 minutes flight time, but they are over £100 each, and apparently the charge time, with the custom charger is appalling. I would much rather have the Phantom, which will take my normal 2200 batteries, of which I have a whole bunch.

Also, the Phantom is available as a Phantom only version for £309, which seems good to me, but it isn't in stock.

Plus, what do I need to be sure that I'm getting? Must be naza v2? Hopefully the gimble thing that they do will fit for future, if I do decide to get one?

Just a complete mess of confusion again.

Should I just buy the Phantom, RTF, and not worry about effectively throwing away a bunch of uneeded gear? Only saves about £45 anyway.

Cheers

Sutty

As with most rtf's the radio is shit. It's just going to go into the pile. Always does eventually.
V2, the flight time is nice, but don't go there.
They are working on a new lipo incorporating Germanium which gives the same lipo a hell of a lot more mah's.

I'll ask tomorrow when they are getting the bare bones Phantom 1 in stock, and if it is more than two weeks I'll just order the rtf one then, even though I'll have to throw away the Tx, Rx, and charger, etc, and it will cost me another £45.

Cheers

Your indesisiveness paid off. My research shows DJI properly translates to PIA. You would be "stuck" using a stock TX. You would also pay out the wazoo for overpriced crap that would decide at any given moment to not RTH, but off to China instead. The Walkera QRX350 uses audercopter FW. It gets delightful reviews and most issues are newb related. You can use your existing lipos/charger/TX/RX. 20-25min flight times and it does RTH. Cost is half of DJI and quality is tripple. I'll be getting the Walkera.

Oh and Blade Schmade also overpriced.

I am jumping on the quad bandwagon as well. I don't know if this is a good choice but my shopping list contains among other things the following items :

Tarot Iron Man 650 CF
Cheapo Cameramount
KK Controller
4 x 6s capable motors
4 x 6S capable ESCs
4 x Props

Not at all RTF and not for FPV but to carry a camera filming the river on my upcomming fishing trip
My plan is to use the same 6S batteries I use on the Protos.

I'm with Tjomp on this one - build your own, then you know exactly what you have, how it works and how to fix it. No matter how good the RTF or PNF products are, there are proprietary components in there, which will catch you out one way or another. Even if it's just that they are expensive to buy or only available from one source and they stop making them.

Your shopping list looks good to me. Make sure you get the KK2.1 or 2.1.5 board, and upgrade to the Steveis 1.17s firmware, much more stable.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2144803
I use this on my 250 quad, very steady even in a 7 or 8 mph wind.

Once the bug bites, you will probably want to upgrade to something with GPS etc. Ardupilot Mega is an excellent controller that you can get surprisingly cheaply now.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...A2KVVEZQUSFYSM
And Arducopter firmware with Mission Planner sofrware
http://copter.ardupilot.com/

Here's a couple of pictures of the camera platform that I'm just finishing up. APM controller, NTM 2830 900kv motors on 4S 3600mAh with 10" props. Frame plates are HK SK450 deadcat conversion, arms are 21.5 mm carbon tube from Quadframe, and motor mounts also from Quadframe
http://quadframe.com/
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ter_Frame.html
Cheap gimbal (for now anyway)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...lti_Rotor.html

and AEE SD21 camera
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8G-AEE-SD2...item4179d93d04

Oh yes, and it's sitting on a set of T-Rex 500 skids wrapped in pipe insulation

Hubsan Q4, about £27 RTF. I bet Jack could fly it He needs one, get it ordered!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hubsan-Q4-...item3f2cc0e9d0

Virtually indestructible. Worst that happens in a crash is the props pop off. Comes with 4 spare, I've not needed them yet, even letting friends try it out. Sometimes hard to find them, when they disappear behind the sofa

Full 3 axis gyros and accelerometers, so full heading hold, self level etc, and auto-flip

Awesome value, and a blast around the office.

What's hard to find - the friends hiding or the props

Thanks Dave, I think that is just the thing he needs to take it up a level Assume it will BNF to my DX8 or Jacks DX6i, so will check that out first!!

Default It won't walky and talky!!

Hmmm, same problem as Chad and the Phantom I think!!

It's a RTF package, so I'll assume it will only talk to the TX included. Not an issue anyway, as it's for Jack. He'll probably find the stock TX will be lighter than the DX6i, so easier for him to handle. Happy to go with it, cheaper than the plank I was considering......Trigger pulled!!

Ah, yes, the included TX is lighter than a DX6i or DX8. In fact, it weighs less than 70g with batteries (it takes 2 x AAA, which are not included, BTW). The whole RTF package comes in a box only 14cm x 10cm x 6cm. You'll get quite a surprise when you see it I wish I could see your face when it arrives
