First Nitro? - Advice please
Hey there,
I am trying to set my strategy for this hobby and I am wondering what nitro kit I should consider for my first Nitro. I am still a n00b and learning a lot with my blade 400 and my sim... but I really do enjoy the building and tinkering part of the hobby too. Since I have gotten better, I am not crashing as much... so therefore my tinkering time has gone down. Often I walk in from flying and set the heli down and I am done... (lol don't have to rebuild every time now ) So a couple of Ideas came to me - I would like to get a second heli so that a crash doesn't end my day (if I don't happen to have a spare on hand) - and I am pretty certain I want that second heli to be a nitro as I already have a good electric heli. I won't say money is not an issue... but I also don't believe in buying something that isn't quality just to save some cash. Thoughts?

if it's your first nitro and you're still learning i'd say try one of the Raptor kits out. looks like a great price on a well-proven heli that has all the basic essentials to help improve your flying ability.
http://www.acehobby.com/ace/TTR4853F08.htm edit: i was down in orlando last month and stopped in at Graves RC. they have a lot of raptor stuff in there. maybe you should pop in there and talk to the heli guys. thats the slickest rc shop i've ever walked in to. it's on OBT north of Colonial if you've never been.

Thanks for the advice.... yeah Graves is just a couple miles down the street from where I work... and I am lucky enough to have another great hobby shop just 10 mins away from my house too. I will take a look at Graves, it's been a while since I stopped in there. I agree it's kind of insane how stocked that store is.

I went with the raptor, and love it! Easy setup, good design right out of the box, no need to mod a bunch of things to get it to be dependable. 12 gallons thru it now and am into fwd flight. just got my phoenix sim, so progress should pick up faster now. The Rappy 50 is very popular and with the 55 motor in it will perform very well. I went with the 90 cause I wanted the extra size, but she is thirsty! 6 tanks per gallon, 8 1/2 min per tank.

Gotta agree with the Raptor. I have a 50 Titan SE, and I've never looked back. Awesome machine!
Pretty darn sure my next heli is gonna be a 90 SE Raptor 50 Titan SE: [ame]http://vimeo.com/6580691[/ame] Raptor 90 SE: [ame]http://vimeo.com/6002030[/ame]

some guys might laugh but I picked up a hirobo shuttle zx in great condition, came with a 7ch radio system 5 servos, gy401. basically rtr for 90$ and put about 60 into it. it is a rock solid unit you can feel it when you see the unit. My next heli will be a hirobo sdx. heard great things from a lot of guys and the overall quality seems to be top notch. it is a .50 size though.

another is selling a raptor with the electronics and engine for 450.00 starting bid. I am guessing the price comes out to about the same if not better (if I could actually get it for 450.00) on the one with the engine and electronics. - Might just go with the 200.00 one and slowly get it going with engine and electronics etc.

One just has to be careful buying used - I'd never buy a used heli from a person with any neg. feedback or [ebay] not much history. Ask several questions to the seller on what your getting if you buy it and if there is any doubt MOVE ON! and dont bid or buy......there is ALWAYS a great selection of used helis between here, ebay, rcu, rr, and other sites. I asked my seller to call me and I spoke with him for 20 minutes asking him a prepared list of questions I had on his R-90, and only after that, did I buy it (off RCU) Good luck and have fun with your 1st nitro!

Don't forget to check out the Audacity Models Pantera 50. Great flying heli, nice and smooth, parts readily available from Genesis Hobby, or Ronlund.com. $199 kit or 2 for $300 with the Buy One Get One 1/2 price offer.
I was very skeptical of the claims made about the Pantera prior to purchasing one. Since the purchase, my Raptor seldom gets flown. Great support directly from the designer, manufacturer - John Beech. While the Pantera may not look as sexy as some other designs, she's a very rewarding heli in flight, economical to own, easy to maintain, and durable. Some folks don't like the Raptor because they feel that plastic frames are outdated. The Raptor is still a very viable design and like the Pantera, is very durable, so don't fear the fiber reinforced poly frames! Having flown Raptors and a friends T-rex 600n a bit, I didn't think the Pantera would have anything to offer other than an inexpensive kit price. Man, was I wrong! Finless has done a Pantera build and in his typical fashion, makes it very easy to start at step one and wind up with a great flying heli. Good luck with your heli hunting!

Thanks for all the advice! I have a lot to think about... which is cool! I think I am going to head to the local club this weekend and sign up... and see if there are a few heli guys and see some of these nitros in person!

If this is your first nitro, and you have a club scene it would be really easy to learn the basics of tuning and tweaking an engine from other experienced flyers. They are not too hard to tune, but they are not too forgiving either. If you lean one out too much, they can burn up in a couple minutes. There are also tons of threads here on it in the main forum and in the engine section on tuning, to fuel types/glo plug brands/tuned pipes/overhaul tips/ - you name it. Even some vids on overhaul and tweaking. Keep us posted!!!
