Default 3rd Bearing block for 600

Well I got started on my 600 and wanted a 3rd main bearing for it. Could not find a 9x19x5 bearing so I bored out the bearing block to 20mm and put in a 9x20x6 bearing.
Looks like it is going to work great, I hope!
If anyone would like me to do a 3rd bearing block and/or frame drilling for them, I would be happy to do it.

I wish I had seen this back when I did it myself. I ended up using a spare 600N frame as a template, bolting the frame onto the 600ESP frame inverted, then drilling through the 600N holes as guides. Now I have to use 600N style "shouldered" screws for the 3rd bearing block, and I'm not convinced that it's perfectly lined up with the other blocks.

You should make a deal to do a batch of 600ESP frame drilling for some online retailer, or sell them yourself. I'd buy!

Actually, what I'd *really* like is a metal template that you bolt on to the stock ESP's side frame through the stock bearing block holes. Just a rectangle of metal that has holes for the 3rd bearing block screws and notch as a guide for drilling. That way people could make more frames when they crash.

ferret30, I think I could make some templates for the frames.
Let me check it out and see what I can do.
I think I saw that someone was making a template already here on HF.

Your referring to my2cents..he had made a drill template for locating the hole for the 3rd bearing block

I tried to contact him a few months ago about a template, unfortunately he hasn't logged into HeliFreak since August '09. So I'm still interested in some sort of template since I know I'll be needing to drill another set of frames (or 4) sometime and the approach I used was neither fast nor precise!

The "Custom Heli Parts" frames are interesting, but from a long term cost and support point of view, I'd rather buy a new stock ESP frame set and a template than an upgrade frame set.

Did you use a drill press or something? I couldn't get mine aligned well enough, and I was using a cordless drill the first time around, so the bit might have wandered a little before starting the hole. I'm better off now that I figured out how to use a 600N frame as a template, but that meant I had to use 600N shouldered screws, and I'm still not sure it's aligned since the shaft takes a little extra force to install once it gets to the 3rd bearing.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a template so I can make consistent frame holes in the future!

I scribed the hole location dimensions using a dial caliper, then using a pin vise and .015 drill bit, started a pilot hole, then drilled the final diameter hole with a drill/driver.
worked out just fine for me.
The block lined up perfectly, and the main shaft fell right through all 3 bearings

I'd be interested in a modified block and bearing. Problem is they only sell the blocks as a pair. Have you considered selling a single modified block with a bearing? I'd pay a bit of a markup for your troubles.

Oh, and this is for a CF. Doesn't only apply to an ESP so you might want to change your title.

Had the same problem. I enlarged the holes with a round file just a bit to make the shaft sit perflectly. It doesn't matter if the holes are little too large since you use the four screws to lock the bearing block in place.

ferret30, Here are some pic's of the drilling template that I came up with. Let me know what you think.

thats a good job on the bearing block. this weekend im going to my buddies work and he is going to machine a aluminum sleeve to make the bearing the same physical dimensions as the upper blocks. so no machining of my bearing block. but i like your idea also looks very nice!!

wat are the dimensions of the third bearing block? like on the frame.

Very nice piece of machining
But I do believe you could get the same results using .062 material and save the costs

Nightflyer, Thanks!!! I know my wife says I do things in over kill!
But the 3/8 plate will keep the drill bit a little straighter.
Also it is what I had handy.

minimalitia, Not sure what you are asking about the dimensions of the block. It is just a standard 600 block. That I bored out to 20mm.

I think your sleeve idea like Nightflyer's bearing sleeve will work just fine. I just got this idea and started working on it.

The holes (incl tab hole) are in line with the 2 others. As far as vertical positioning, you can just measure the distance between the mid block holes and the edge of the frame's main gear opening. Use the same offset below the gear opening for the 3rd block. I don't think the vertical position is as important so long as it's close to the bottom of the gear opening so it will still capture the 600N/E main shaft.

Wow, that is beautiful! No slipping around like when I tried to clamp 2 frame halves together for a crappy template. And I think that thick metal will prevent the drill from wearing away at the template. This is making me want to take some machining classes somewhere, or make friends with someone with that kind of equipment in my city!
