Default Engine temp

I never got to grips with touching an engine to see if it is too hot so I have a non contact IR thermometer coming. I did a search but came up with nothing so can you tell me what the too hot temp range is for an OS 32.

NO that is the cylinder wall .
Move toward the head where there are fins on the cylinder just before it turns into the head

There are waaaaay to many variables to tune based on temp alone. For instance 5 different replies on where to measure? How long do you let it idle before checking? Check it running or not? What's the outside air temp? All of these could change your measurements by a huge margin. Your best bet is to learn to tune by sight, sound, and performance as thousands before you have. If in doubt run it slobbering rich and lean it a click at at a time. And touch the backplate not the cylinder. General rule of thumb is if you can hold your finger there a few seconds you are prob good. 50s are VERY forgiving compared to the big boys.

Exactly. You are overthinkink this heat gun thing. The backplate is the usual place to check temp, not the cylinder. What will you do if you see a temp
way to high or low when experimenting with this device? Turn the needle 2 turns in?

Tuning a nitro engine is half science and half art. It takes a good ear to get it right.
As mentioned, start way rich and tune leaner untill power peaks and exhaust note
is smooth and crisp.

Use the laser on the temp gun to chase the cat.

I'm not too cos I don't want a burnt finger.

Main reason for the IR Temp gun was to use it to CONFIRM when I think it is running too hot, not as a tuning tool per se. Once I find a good spot to check the temp it will also act as a bit of a baseline.

You guys are fooling yourselves if you think shooting an IR temp gun at an RC engine is going to give you any valuable data. Try the same experiment 10 times, and shoot the
gun in slightly different places at slightly different times and report the results.

Tune the engine properly and go fly.

Don't get me wrong, I love experimenting and collecting data. I just have found this particular experiment
fruitless.

It's simply another way of checking things.
