How to shorten DX9 sticks more than stock
I have not been happy with the shortest stick setting on my DX9. I just wanted them a bit shorter. I am a thumber, flying helis and planes.
This has probably been posted already, but I couldn't find in on google. Here's how I did it. If you want to copy me, go ahead, but it's at your own risk. Before you start, try the 'normal' way, of loosening grub screw and screwing in the sticks. If still too long, read on.. Loosen grub screws on sticks. Take off sticks, remove grub screws and set them to one side. Find a metal drill which fits perfectly into the hole in back (the big hole) of the sticks. Put drill fully into hole, and mark about 4mm up the drill bit with a pen (to set the stop position). Drill out hole until mark is lined up with end of sticks. Use a dremel cutting disk to cut off 4mm from the threaded exposed sticks on the transmitter. Don't let the dust get into the transmitter, hold it upright instead of lying on back. Thread the sticks back on, and replace grub screws. Job done.

I've done this mod. More accurately, a buddy of mine did it for me. It got the sticks down to the a length my stubby thumbs can handle. I have not cut off the bolts yet to utilize the set screws, but since I have the sticks screwed all the way down, a little loctite works.

Good point about cutting down the bolts. It is indeed optional.
I thought about it and I knew I would eventually lose the grub screws so I went for it. I am much happier with the shorter sticks I must say.

Me too. I also finally got the stick tensions adjusted to my liking (stiffer on aileron and rudder than on elevator and collective; collective pretty loose).

I just upgraded from a DX7 to the DX9 Black Edition, I know, huge upgrade. Anyway, after lowering the sticks all the way down, it was still too high for my liking. I really didn't want to take a drill and a dremel to my new radio. I flew a couple times with the higher sticks telling myself I'd get used to it. It just didn't feel right to me so I did the mod mentioned above. Super quick and easy and I'm thrilled with the stick height now. Thanks for tip!

Interesting. I did the first half of your mod on my Secraft stick ends about eight months ago to lower them over the shank of the sticks. I achieved my goal of lowering them, but never thought about trimming the sticks themselves. Very cool, thx

Mine are just about right if I remove the setscrew and just snug them all the way down against the sticks themselves. Just have to be really careful to hold the base of the stick and not apply and torque on the base of the stick or it can bust it loose from the gimbal body. I did this once years ago on another brand radio and learned my lesson.

I got new sticks that already had the wider part of the hole in the stick recessed enough to almost touch the bottom. But omitting the grub screw I got it almost all the way down without any mod on my DX9. I still find them a bit high compared to my Futaba radios at the lowest. Any ideas how to go lower. The new sticks are basically the same length externally at 25mm. The only difference is the tips are sharper and lean in.

Not sure if it's still an issue, but you can deepen the clearance hole in the bottom of the aluminum piece.
I did this to mine and they are just right. Find a drill bit that is the sam diameter as the steel post, and carefully drill into the shoulder ( flat section before the threads ). You won't be able to use the grub screw, but I don't find that a problem. |

Drilled out the inside of the tips of the sticks of a new transmitter and then discarded the lower locking portion to get to lowest position and chopped the top off the inside rod to eliminate the protruding portion.
Fit the whole Tx inside a freezer bag and poked two holes through for the rods. The drilling was easy, metal was soft and peeled off. Used a 4.2mm drill bit. Just nice. Easily removes the additional diameter required to fit over 4mm lower OD portion of the rod and keeps centered as it goes without drill press. Just use a bench vice to keep hands safe Works a charm
