heat issue
I am running a scorpion 4035-400 motor, CC 85HV with a CC BEC Pro on the stock main gear with a 21T pinion. I have my timing set low and am flying 3D for about 4 minutes each flight. My motor comes down very hot and my turnigy (20C) packs are hot as well. Ive tried different settings with the ESC and theres really no change. I ordered a Mod 1 gear along with a 14T pinion to avoid gear stripping, not sure if that will help my heat issue as I have not yet flown it with the new gears yet. I am looking at possibly switching over to the 4035-500 motor and running a 12T pinion, as I have noticed it is a popular motor but will this solve my heat problem? Any help would be appreciated.

I have the 500kv and it runs hot. but not as hot as the 700M. On a hard flight I get around 180-200deg and that's warm for that motor.
500kv: The stators are epoxy coated to prevent shorts, and are wound with wire that is rated at 180 degrees C (356 F). The magnets used in Scorpion Motors are N-50EH style, which are rated for operation at 200 degrees C (392 F), making a motor that is virtually impossible to burn up in normal use. I have only flown the 700M, and this 500kv scorpion and for me its a great motor at a great price!

thanks fnity, I havnt actually taken my temp gun to the motor yet but am anxious to see how hot it gets exactly, its very hot to the touch but probably not as hot as its limit. What C rating are your packs? I need to upgrade from the 20C's that im currently using.

If you put a bigger pinion on it it will get hotter. I am running the Turnigy 20Cs and they are barely warm after a flight. The motor does get pretty hot but it should be able to handle it.

what motor/pinion are you running? Im running the 400Kv and just got a 14T M1 pinion and gears, not sure if the pinion is too big...maybe I should get a 13T as well.

I have the 500kv and 12 tooth pinion. I didn't catch that you had the 400kv.

jetblue2135,
Im using Hyperion CX 5000 25/35C packs, and they work great. The VX 35C/65C were a bit long so Im running the 25C and they come down warm after 5 min of hard flight..... Next packs I get will be the new Voltz packs from ReadyHeli PS. it should be extremely hot to the touch, not a reliable way to get a temp reading.... Get a temp gun on it Venom On-Board Micro Temperature Monitor

21T on 400 KV Motor Calculates to 3770 RPM, so yes that motor should be smoking hot.
Depending on Headspeed 13T,14T is what you want. Think of it riding a 10 speed bike in 10th Gear going 3 MPH, A lot of energy(heat) to keep the pedals going..

no way dude. 13 or 14T what do you mean I ordered a mod 1 gear? The 700E comes with a mod 1 gear.. Is this a conversion?

My guess is that its a typo... 21T=12T

You have to be right. I doubt the thing would even get off the ground on 21T with like a 10% Throttle Curve...

I forgot to put in there that it is on my nitro conversion with the 164T main gear and 21T pinion with the heat issues. This heat issue is on my 700N converted to electric, however I have decided to change it over to a straight 700E using the align 700E frames along with the other parts needed to change over. So now I will be running the 700E mod 1 main gear and a 14T pinion on my 400Kv scorpion motor.

^^ ^^There you go, Im not familiar with that motor, but with the 164T gear it should still be a smaller pinion.....
I might be missing something, dont know anything about the conversions but that just seems wrong to me

The 20/21T pinion recommended to me from bobby smith at RREmodels. Im looking forward to trying the new pinion and gears...along with the converted 700E as a real 700E now.
