I've been meaning to post for a while to mention that, like Scott, I also bought Luis's battery tray mod and am very happy with it. You do need to provide your own bolts but the parts quality is very good and the pieces go together easily. I used the recommended M3 X 40mm bolts but you can probably find non-metric sized bolts that fit if you prefer since they really don't need to match up with anything else on the heli. I don't know why my plastic combo kit came with a 6S APLUS 3700 35C battery since it certainly won't fit the stock plastic frame but it WILL fit this tray mod as seen in the first photo. The second photo is that same setup with a Fusuno canopy mounted showing that the flybar paddles will clear the canopy. That battery is pretty large so the COG is a bit nose heavy but I think it will be manageable. I'm just finishing the build so it hasn't been flown yet. A 6S Zippy 3000 40C fits and is only very slightly nose heavy. For ~$30 this is a mod I would highly recommend for anyone using the stock plastic frame.

Good review, Bill. One thing you might want to do is grind half circles on the side where the servo mounts. That way, you can get to the servo mounting screws easier. Or, you could just take off the battery mount.

Another thing... with Hyperion 3300 VX 35C batteries, the CG was pretty much spot on.

If you still have CG issues and they begin to nag you, you can always move the tail servo to the boom. That way, you move the servo a bit in its mount to get CG spot on.

Scott,

Good suggestions (although I'm a Zippy fan and probably too cheap for the Hyperions! ).

Bill, fly the Turnigy's over the Zippies they are much much better! We have been doing tests and the Turnigy's are kickin butt and takin names. Well worth the few extra over the Zippies.

Thanks, Shane, good to know. I looked at the Turnigy's also but it was just a matter of which sizes were in stock at Hobby City at the time I ordered. Once I decide which size and weight battery I like I'll give the Turnigy's a try.

Great battery mod. Does anyone know if this would fit a 7s A123 pack? 4 cells on bottom, 3 on top, as well as with the stock canopy?

mrbubbs

the Lipo I am using is - 5.86 X 1.88 X 1.73 ( with Outrage Canopy you have space left over)
Lots of room to play with, as far as how wide it goes,

With the Stock Canopy.. Battery has to be moved down on the tray but its a tight fit.
Stock Canopy is very narrow also. Personaly I dont like the look

Moving the battery down affects the CG quite a bit

Not sure if this helps you.

That helps! Thanks. I need a new canopy and I just have the stock plastic one at the moment.

Also, since I just sold my A123s, I'm going 6s LiPo (probably 3000, 3300, or maybe a little larger?). So I'm gonna need your mod! I'll PM to get the info.

I've always hated the battery mount on the plastic H550. I guess if you're using it as it was designed, 2 3s packs, then it's fine, but I bet most people don't.

Thanks everyone for your comments..

I've cut balsa and play before..

but CF that was new ....it has to be cut very .. very .. very slow..

2"/ Min - while .. I can max out my cnc on other materials.. 14"/ Min

the final fit really has to be hand filed and sanded.

but when you need a part ..well you need a part..

I have really enjoyed working on Heli's been now just over a year since I started to tinker with them.

or course like all things don't get to do it as much as I like.

Could the carbon fibre ever interfere with the 2.4ghz radio signal?

I know Spectrum now has a CF Rx - But If I understand right its intended for an enclosed CF Fuse.

I have my Rx on one side of the Heli, and the Remote Rx on the opposite side, more to the front.

The tray is for the Plastic Frame it- has far less CF than any Heli out there and I have the Rx-evers .. .. Mounted no where close to it.

Hope that helps

Speaking of carbon fiber, how does the receiver hold up with carbon fibre blades between it and the transmitter?

Thumbs up

I bought this mod in July and, now, several months later, I finally got around to installing it.

The mod is super simple. I was a little apprehensive about cutting the stock plastic mount for the battery off and doing some Dremel work. However, I realized I could get away with cutting enough of the front plastic battery mount with some side cutters. I initially thought the tray mod mounted flush with the front but it actually goes around the outsides and uses the existing frame bolt locations. Easy enough! I eventually decided to grind off the jagged plastic remains of the stock battery mount to make the front of the frame smoothed out as in the photos in the first post of this thread. This really only took about 15 seconds and didn't hurt at all.

Now that I have installed the battery tray mod, I wish I had done it sooner!

Looking at how it fits together and quite actually bolts right onto the frame, I feel it's a pretty genius idea! Great work. It's great that all the required hardware is provided, even the battery straps!

One thing I wasn't sure about was the bottom CF plate. I had that installed backward so that the hole was nearer the back of the heli. Looking at the pics closely made me realize I had to rotate it so that the hole was closer to the front. Otherwise, the screws won't go through.

Now I can fly a single 6s pack without messing around with putting 2 packs in series and 2x as many velcro straps. Just two easy straps and one pack from now on! Whoo hoo!
