Something about that big red main gear under the std 61t main gear has me compelled to try and mod the 550 to go single stage.

Funny you say that NG. A certain pilot who happens to have the intials B and W told me about how the X5 was conceived. Cut up a frame, sunk a main gear(insert heli type here) and said to the factory, this is what's needed. Short version anyways. I really like the multigear arrangement on the Hurri as you have so many options but this is definately solid and looks very efficient. Vas

Yes it is mate.Heli is about 15-20mm taller. They look very similiar with the hole placement and collar position but the X5 shaft is about 15mm longer on the bottom half.
Collar up is the same.(rough measurement with allen key). When i remove it, will measure exact. I've been trying to take note of the similar yet different bits but also am getting carried away building it Please keep asking away if you guys spot anything. BTW, flybar length 400mm. Gaui must've been watching our threads Vas

The thing that struck me is that there is a lot of height beneath the main gear - the whole heli looks a lot bigger than I was expecting

Mike, it feels/looks alot bigger heli. Doesn't have that low profile of the Hurricane.
To me, it looks very much so in proportion for a heli.

Tail assembly
]Had a bit of time this morning so decided to do the tail assembly.
What's in the boxes Parts out of the bag Boom comes pinned with a 3mm bolt I do like the chrome tail supports.Shiny, shiny I originally thought they were the same as used on the Hurricane but these are 90mm longer. An issue i had since completing the frame was 2 self tapping screws left over. I could not see anywhere for them. Found out they are for the boom supports!! Everything so far had been packed with their relative parts etc and these two screws had me thinking i'd missed something. One thing i really like is the tail/hub grip assembly. Very different from previous Gaui's. The hub is more solid and the grips are now held in via a nut,not the screw like earlier ones. Double radial and thrust bearings in them. All my fleet will have these assemblies from now on. Also like the fact that even though the bolts screw into threads in the housing, Gaui also puts nyloc nuts to be certain they aren't coming out. ---------- Post added at 09:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 PM ---------- So i put her clothes on for a trip down to field this afternoon to have it looked over. But before i put the main blades on i had to have a chuckle at the sticker on the packet. 1900??? umm don't think so It is the same sticker that comes on the woodies. I like the canopy....alot. Compared to the older low profile/long Hurricane ones i'm used to, this has a gorgeous shape. The glass is quite sturdy, not much flex. Paint work is good in my opinion. Not blingboy but more than reasonable. Looks like some stickers have been splaced on it and then the whole thing covered in clear. Also the whole heli has a bigger look. Did i mention i really like the look The two meet. The X5 is about 15-20mm taller. Had my flying buddies Mark and Martin have looksee this arvo. Martin spotted the tail pitch slider binding on full throw one side. Thanks mate. 2 secs with the emery sorted that this eve. Mark noticed that the flybar has alot of travel and on full deflection just touches the top of the elevator guide. Needs about 1mm triangle filed off the back and should clear. Not that it will most likely ever get there in flight Now to get the electronics sorted and wired.

Thanks mate. I'm really really loving the look of the thing.
I'm struggling to work a way to hide the wiring Mike Still have to get a reg and receiver batt for it and trying to work what will also suit the wiring without it being all messy. The BLS451 servo leads aren't very long and would need extensions to try get somewhere close to where i want so hopefully i can get a reg that can sit inbetween somewhere Vas

Nah not cruel Mike. I just wish servos came with bluetooth LOL
I'm still undecided. All my other birds run every becs, or the esc one. Won't be using the esc one as i've had to have any experience with what this esc is capable of. I sorta told myself as it's a new bird , it would be nice to have the sep power for the electrics just in case. I've been trying to track down a Ely Q voltage reg here , light and all in one but no luck. The BLS451 wiring is too short to reach the receiver at the bottom tray and was trying to avoid running extensions as well. Vas

Vas, that thing is gorgeous!
Pretty excited myself, as Mr FedEx man delivered my X5 today! Thanks for explaining what the 2 self tapping screws are for (tail boom support), I would have had sleepless nights not knowing where they supposed to go. Can you please explain just what exactly it is the flybar is hitting, perhaps a picture? Great pictures of the heli dude, it looks friggin AWESOME! G. |

Heya G,
as soon as i get home from work, i'll post a pic up. It really is nothing and i doubt very very very much the flybar will ever come close in flight. My Hurricane's flybars fouled on the canopy way more and they have never touched. It's just me pointing things out as to be as thorough as i can as far is info is concerned. Even if it did touch, it's so minute that it would just glance off. Enjoy the build. It really is such a nice heli to put together and you can see the quality all through. Vas

Pic of the flybar and elevator guide.
As i've said. In flight i doubt very much it would get here. If it did, i'd say you were already in a bit of trouble. For 110% certainty, a quick file on the corner and done. Pic looks worse than what it is. The flybar does have ALOT of travel, i likey Vas

Hi Vas
Ha ha, the boys here call it an anti-rotation bracket, hence my confusion, personally I think elevator guide is a more fitting description. Thanks for the pic bud and clearing that up. I can see your concern, like you said, probably will never hit in flight, however if left in that position on spool up ...................... Yeah gonna really enjoy building this bird, only problem is it will not be for a month or so, I have a wedding and honeymoon coming up in a fortnights time! Thanks alot for this super thread dude and let us know what your final decision is regarding the electrics. G Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I wouldn't be too sure about it not hitting. I had an old HDX300 that used to go through AR brackets like they were going out of style. the flybar was able to make contact, and it did plenty of times. in my case the fb would come easily 1/3 down the bracket, clearly a design flaw in the case of that bird.

G,it's anti-rotation bracket here too. I tend to make my own technical terms when the memory banks won't boot up.
Congrats on the wedding and have fun on the honeymoon. Lots of time for helis after. Inbetween what she wants to do that is The X5 is a really nice and quick build. I'm sure if you had everything on hand, it could be done easily in an evening. Enjoy

Anti-rotation bracket vasification
After reading NG's comments(thanks mate) i got out the dremel.
A few touches and 30 seconds later. Better safe than sorry i guess. Atleast now it clears easily.

Thanks for the wedding wishes dude, I must say I am quite looking forward to it, not to mention the week off work sunning myself in the Canary Islands doing some surfing and kitesurfing, oh yeah and keeping the missus happy! Nice job on the anti rotation bracket, looks like me and you both have servos with friggin short leads! WTF is all that about??? I am interested to see what you come up with dude. BTW what camera are you using? G. |
