Default Want to run 2300rpm with plastic head

Have a HC550 stock plastic frame/head, TonicX Z20 980kv, 500z-weaves, geared-15/42/19/61 at approx 2178rpm. Want to run a slightly higher rpm as I'm getting into more aggressive flying and 3d, so am thinking of changing the OWB to a 20t I've got, approx giving just under 2300?

Should I go to a metal head for security or will the plastic blade grips be fine?

Well, I will offer a few thoughts on this. First, you said you were running '500z-weaves' which I will assume are 500mm blades and not 550mm. I ran a head speed of 2000 with plastic grips and 550's , and also ran 3000 rpm on my 425 with plastic grips and 430's for light sport flying. Never had a problem.

The key here though is that you stated you were getting into harder more aggressive flying and that is where you might run into some trouble. Just like running wood blades are ok for light sport flying but generally will fail with aggressive flying, the plastic grips may not take the extra load of hard flying.

The choice is totally yours of course, but, to be on the safe side I would recommend at least installing the performance upgrade kit that comes with metal grips and head block. You didn't mention whether it was FB or FBL. If it is a FB head the upgrade kit also comes with light weight paddles for better cyclic response.

BTW, I have a medium boomed Hurri built on a HeadHunter frame running 500mm blades at about 2400rpm and it flys great at that head speed. And yes, it has a complete CNC Gaui head upgrade on it as does my 425 now that I am flying a little bit harder myself. I have never had a plastic grip fail, but, that doesn't mean they won't as I have read about others having it happen, just never experienced it myself.

Thankyou for your response. I'm running a flybar. I'll run with what I have and sort out a cnc head very soon just for insurance. Safety first.

Actually just need a yoke and grips.
