Sounds good James. My plan: I will solder everything (no heatshrink), test ESC's/motors, program KK controller, test ESC's/motors again and swap motors wires if nessesary (for any reversed), test again (no props), test again "hold quad above my head with props ".
real test flight, if everything is OK, finish with heatshrink. Basic question about electrical connections for programming KK controler. Please confirm if im correct. basically I can connect supplied USB programer to KK controller and to PC, nothing else needs to be connected (ESCs, batt, reciever, etc)? I'm correct? (I understand about downloading/installing driver/software, etc). |

Sounds fine - don't forget to thread the heatshrink onto all wires BEFORE soldering, you can then slide it over the joins and shrunk when your happy (I'd use tape to cover bare wires for testing to avoid shorts).
Controller programming, I think it depends on which programmer you have, on the one I have I just plug programmer into bare controller (nothing else connected, jumper plugged on controller), and blue light on controller flashes to indicate it has power as soon as USB is plugged in, then program away. Details below from https://www.helifreak.com/showpost.p...7&postcount=23 thread where I got help with this from kc8ykd. My controller board is marked KK multicopter controller by Rolf R. Bakke 2010 www.kkmulticopter.com Version 5.5 The chip on front has mega 168pa on it in tiny writing. Programmer I have is USBasp with one jumper (which needs to be plugged on) and looks like this: Driver which worked for me on USBasp programmer is http://www.protostack.com/accessorie...avr-programmer I just uninstalled the driver I had, and installed this one (by plugging USB controller in and browsing to the inf file) then flashed using KK flashtool - I chose X copter v4.7 - red light on controller shows writing, took about 30 seconds to write and then verify ended up with success message. Testing you can arm/disarm the controller proves this has worked. |

OK...I made good progress... but unable to flash KKcontroller for now, USB driver installed with no problem, however getting an error in KK flashtool "cannot find driver". I tried to select different "programmers" from the list, but no luck. My KKcontroller came in with Xcopter 2.4 firmware preloaded, so at the end I was able to test my new X-Quad (with props) in garage at midnight. I was able to take off few inches from the garage floor, quad feels so sensitive to controls, looks like some adjustments need to be done like "Setting Gyro gain" and the reaction of sticks at transmitter.
Any advice is welcome. P.S. In overall I was able to build my first quad in basically 3 days with no user manual, no experience, but with help from James, this forum, my friend Chris (thank you for providing transmitter while mine is backordered), Google and luckily all parts came in working condition . Update: http://lazyzero.de/en/modellbau/kkmulticopterflashtool The USBasp's from goodluckbuy.com are not 100% USBasp and do not work, the first orders where served with “good” USBasp's, but users report more and more that they deliver now the incompatible xwopen USBasp. |

Has anyone purchased their kit from GoodLuckBuy. I purchased a kit from them a week ago and paid for expedited shipping to receive in in 3 to 5 days and it still shows on there website as processed ,but not shipped yet and they won't return my emails. Is this company a ripoff?

Personally I would stick with v2.4, if it flies OK (which I'm sure it will), at least you know not to waste time trying to get USB programmer to work - I'd try and find someone nearby who can flash your controller for you (or buy another one from Hong Kong to flash so you can swap back and forth and try things out - they are only about $24 delivered) - once you have the drivers setup, it literally takes 30 seconds to program a controller (rather than the hours messing about trying to get the programmer/driver/flashtool to work) ! Re sensitivity, I'd start by using some expo (on DX8 I have 20% expo on ail/ele/rudder), you could always experiment with dual rates as well. I found to get the quad to flip I maxxed ATV to 150% and Rates to 125%, but using 20% expo it was still not overly sensitive around centre - depending on how you plan to fly, you could reduce these a lot for smooth upright flying. Also, flying in a garage is always going to make the controls feel sensitive as you are close to walls etc, so flying outside in open space - it should feel much better My Update is I fitted the 8x4.5 props last night and AR6110e receiver (prev 10x4.5/AR6100e) - the props seem tiny, I wasn't sure if it would even fly, but it takes off and climbs reasonably well (not as dramatic climb rate as bigger props), I was flying in the dark under a streetlight, so need to check it properly in daylight - also the LEDs worked really well, much much easier to see which way its pointing, so very pleased with them, and resistors still cold to touch after being on for several minutes, so happy the 82ohm resistors on each LED are OK. |

James, I'm planning to install orange "ping pong" ball at the front to show direction, like some guys do, also LEDs 1m blue strip has been ordered from HobbyKing to mount under FRONT arms and few on top (like you did).
I’m planning to order more props and need to decide on size. I have 9050 tri-blade right now and they looks and spins REALLY good (no balance required), will do performance test as soon as finish tuning. The question is what props are the best for FPV (nice smooth cruising)? |

I would suggest you get some 10x4.5 and 8x4.5 props to compare, depending how much your FPV gear weighs (as 8x4.5 may not lift much), I'd also try to get two colour props (ie orange for front/black for back or similar) as they really help with orientation - then again if you have really good LEDs, then this might not be an issue. The props are pretty cheap (I'm paying almost as much postage as prop), so for the sake of curiosity, I'd suggest its worth trying all the sizes. |

Since I haven't seen the 525 yet (though there website said my order was complete after a week, now I have to wait for it to be shipped), does anyone know if you could put 2 motors on each arm, giving it more lift and a little safer with a camera onboard?

I test flew the 8x4.5 props properly today, it hovers just over half stick, and full stick it climbs reasonably, flips seemed fine, and it felt much the same flying around, a 6min flight took 1400mah out of the pack.
UPDATE: put an amp meter onboard yesterday and hovering with 8x4.5 props is taking 14Amps, max current (holding quad above my head at full power) 34Amps, I flew 8min45secs on a fresh lipo before lipo alarm started beeping, so will check how much recharges. UPDATE: The 10x4.5 props, hovers under half stick, full stick climb is ridiculously quick (and props I think were overspeeding as fluttered/noisy at full stick, but I never held it long), hovering is taking 12.5Amps, max current (held above my head) was 47Amps ! 6 min flights are taking about 1290mah to recharge - hard to be sure as every flight is different, and I was chucking it around today with the 8" props. On balance I prefer the 10x4.5 (due to excessive power, more response to cyclic and better 'pop' on power), but feel the 8x4.5 are probably more appropriate for no payload flying. Hi James, question for you regarding 4.7 kapteinkuk firmware. Im trying to find any info for initial X configuration. You already have some exprience please guide me to my first flight.
Is this correct? Anything else I need to do? What other adjustments you would recommend (on board giros and transmitter)? X-mode setup: Motor 1: front left, CW Motor 2: back left, CCW Motor 3: Front right, CCW Motor 4: Back right, CW |

Jonny - you need to check through normal setup procedure, I had to reverse yaw gyro, and I flew with roll and yaw gain at 50%, pitch pot (I-term?) at zero and it flies fine like this.
I had to put in quite a lot of trim (forward and left) to hover hands off, so be careful on first take offs, I understand 2.4 had a centering function, so it would learn your radio centre position, this is gone from 4.7 to make room for other functions. For 'normal' flying, I found it fine on 100% rates/travel with some expo, for flips I have maxxed it out (rate/ATV) and 20% expo and its still fine for flying around 'normally'. |
